A Good Chair?
What do you guys recommend for a good trail (backpack) chair?

Is there one light enough and comfortable enough to consider hauling it with me?

RE: A Good Chair?
If you have a Therma Rest get one of the chair kits. Very little extra weight and they work well enough.

For short trips a Dove stool (about 2 pounds) works. For longer trips I fold up my Z'rest.

I just saw that one.. but you have to buy a pad separately?.. kinda pricey.. but that's the one I hear the most about.

Thermarest chair is about $50.00. Pad is extra.

I think I am going to pass on buying a chair for THIS next trip I got coming up, but at least I know what to tell Santa what I want for Christmas.

Crazy creek chair is a bout 1 1/2 lbs. Nice and comfy. Also great if you're into canoeing.

At the dollar store, you can find those foam pads used as "knealers" when gardening.

If ya want cheap and don't mind carrying a chair seperate from your sleeping pad run on down to your friendly neighborhood Taget. They have a very good chair for $15 in their camping section. I have one and use it for car camping. Weighs maybe 1.5 - 2 pounds.

Slinglite - there's a canoeing website that sells it for $69. I paid $99 locally. Weighs 17 oz. Holds up to 250 lbs. Mine finally ripped on day 26 of the JMT. Have to find out where to send it to fix it. I've had it awhile and use it all the time.

RE: A Good Chair?
After seeing those ThermaRest chair kit (just slip the pad into and sit), I believe that, and an LED headlamp, will be my next gear purchases. However, after pricing the chair kit, I was appalled at the cost...practically as much as a chair with the built in pad costs. I figured it'd be less than $20...NOT! Try $30 - $47 depending on where you get them.

Ummanna try to make one maself...sooner'er later!

I pack one of those net type hammocks. They are light, don't take up much space and realy comfotable as for a afternoon nap or if you take your time you can set them up at the perfect hight for a chair.I weigh about 210 and mine has lasted for years.

RE: A Good Chair?
Z-Rest weighs nothing and is worth carrying as a chair and to protect your expensive self-inflator sleeping pad.

RE: A Good Chair?
The therma-rest sleeping pad and chair kit are well worth the dollars for the amount of comfort they afford me at days end. I think, combined, they weigh 2 1/2 pounds and cost $105. (I have the Guide Lite pad)

RE: A Good Chair?
I use a Slinglight OR if I am trying to go really light I take two sections of a Z-rest. I fold the Z-rest the wrong direction and lean on my pack for a back rest. The little bit of Z-rest is nice for my feet at night.

Snow Nymph--I have had several of the chairs recovered--call the phone number at slinglight.com. It costs about $20. I have also had them send me a second for the $20 when I had mucked up the chair.

RE: A Good Chair?
I love my new thermarester. I leave the cover on all the time to protect my thermarest pad. It is 99% protected. Extremely comfortable and easy to use.

It was normally priced at aroung $50. I got it on sale for $29.

Another choice if you're looking just for a chair is one at WalMart for $9 with the padding of closed cell foam and of Therma-rest/Crazy Creek type basic design.

RE: A Good Chair?
Have a good sit in one first as they aren't as comfortable as they appear. I find you cant beat some closed cell foam to sit on and lean up against a good tree or rock.

The great specter Cow Patty makes a brief appearance, dispensing wisdom, before dissipating and returning to her ethereal plane of existence. LOL! Nice to see your face Patty. 8)

LOL, Nigal !! Hi!

I did sit in one of the WalMart chairs in the store & as a disclaimer profess no wisdom & don't own any chair! (I did try out Skiracer's Thermarest chair once, tho!)

RE: A Good Chair?
If you go with the Therma-Rest chair kit, shop around until you find the one that completely slides over your pad. This way, you just roll her all up when you're done. I've got the chair which must come off the pad when you want to stow it or sleep. It's kind of a pain in the a**. I still wouldn't trade it for anything.

RE: A Good Chair?
I'm real hard on my gear, I've blown up at least 3 chairs and the only one that seems to last is the Crazy Creek. I just retired my first Crazy Creek, after almost 3 years.

I'm too lazy to stop and stuff my pad into a Therma Rest chair each time I want to sit down (never tried leaving it in there) , or perhaps I just sit down too often.

RE: A Good Chair?
Thanks, MaryPhyl. When the material ripped on the Slinglite, I sat on rocks. My tender skin (ha!) got scraped up and raw, so I used moleskin. The stuff won't stick to the feet, but it stayed on my my butt cheeks til the end of the trip. No more sitting on rocks for me.

I've had my crazy creek for six years. It looks pretty bad but still is cozy and in great shape.

RE: A Good Chair?
The last time I got a new Slinglight I put duct tape on the inside across where it would rub against the bar on the bottom. It seems like it might last longer that way.

I can just see you with moleskin on your backside. chuckles

Phil-where did you get your thermarester? Is it the same thing Naviguesser had on the Llama-rama?

It's kinda heavy and cumbersome
and would look funny on the trail but think of all the fun to be had with this awesome chair.
