God Bless American Meatloaf! “I speak here this evening about that great American institution - the storefront message board. It seems that every gas station and restaurant in America is now in the business of reaffirming our love of country. One problem, of course, arises. These boards do more than just arouse patriotism. They also attempt to sell us the products of daily life. So, it was that I passed one of my favorite restaurants on the way home from work - a restaurant that often advertised the special of the day. Now, I admit that I was driving like a madman. And I also admit that my last hour class had just sent me into a temporary fit of lunacy, so... In my weakened condition, I merged the patriotic with the mundane and read the sign: "God Bless American Meatloaf". Of course, I spent the rest of the evening wondering why, in fact, American meatloaf deserved the support of the almighty over, say, Kazakhstani meatloaf. But, after a bit, it became clear that this was freedom-loving meatloaf, and, as such existed on a higher moral plane. Certainly, God loves American meatloaf above all others. So, you will excuse my embarrasment the following day when I realized that I had, in my driving recklessness, added an inadvertant "n". Wishing to help others avoid this national peril, I exhort you all to avoid mixed messageboard madness. The patriotic and the culinary do not mix. We should not allow lasagna, fettucine alfredo or even our beloved meatloaf to interfere with our national resolve. God Bless America, but hold the meatloaf.
