Your Thoughts? “Ok, your thoughts. Hiking from Carver's Gap to US 19E is the preferred direction because the hike is a lot easier that way. Going from S to N you climb about 2000 and slide down about 5000. Obviously to go from N to S it have the opposite; i.e., you climb about 5000 and slide down about 2000. I have always planned on doing the hike in the PREFERRED direction. However, there are some reasons for doing a hike the hard way. The most common is that you really appreciate the views if you have to climb up to mountain to get there. Any masochists in the crowd? I have to say, logistically it is easier to get a shuttle to pick us up in the campsite and take us to US 19E. Essentially we just walk back to our car. Going S to N, the preferred way, I call the shuttle about an hour before we step out onto US 19E. Your thoughts?” 9:28:16 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “Bring "lite" beer!” 9:31:11 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “I knew I should have given this a better title.. maybe "do you prefer to get up or go down". All kidding aside, I am serious with this thread. I can't decide which direction to do this hike that I am leading in a week and a half.” 10:03:25 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “I don't really like hiking uphill but it's easier on the knees than downhill.” 10:12:21 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “That section from 19E to Doll Flats is a LUNG BUSTER! Have a great time! The major advantage you would get going that way is that you don't end up leaving your car at 19E. There have been many cars vandalized and even set on fire at that parking spot.” 10:22:18 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “Oh, we were not going to leave a car there anyway. I had already contacted a shuttle service who was going to pick up up there, but logistically, it is a lot easier to just let them TAKE us there, than to guess WHEN we would be stepping OUT onto US19E.” 10:27:06 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “Less up more down is good.” 10:27:19 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “TimBros: since you have FIRST hand experience, let's talk. Email or phone?” 10:31:31 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “I'm melting.. I'm melting.. dang.. post a serious thread without sex, drugs, or rock and roll and it dies.” 11:26:58 AM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “Go south to north.” 1:00:35 PM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “Ever stop to think, and then forget to start again?” 1:33:35 PM 10/05/01 RE: Your Thoughts? “< a href="http://www.tehcc.org/atinfo.htm">TEHCC AT Info The Tennessee Eastman Hiking & canoe Club manages and maintains 127 miles of the AT between Spivey Gap, NC and Damascus, VA. I knew what you meant.” 2:12:17 PM 10/05/01
