Bustin more new trail
I helped add a little more to the Cumberland Trail (CTC)in Tennessee. Not sure what our present distance is now. Prolly about 120 miles done. maybe close to halfway.
Started Friday morning and quit Sunday about noon. Rained on us pretty hard Friday night but stopped by morning. Sloppy trail cutting for a bit Saturday.
Only 5 total people showed up to help. For a small crew, we were happy with what we'd done.

I believe ALL BPers & dayhikers should go out at least one weekend a year and help do trail maintaince or help build new trail. It really makes you appreciate the work that goes into carving it.

Good job WD, if you can give me enough advance notice on your next trail maintenance project, I will plan on being there to help

RE: Bustin more new trail
Yeah, I thought about having an ECT at one of the completed sections. Lemme find out when hunting season is in what areas and I'll put a 2 or 3 nighter together. I don't want us to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When I was in the CCC's back in 1987, my crew built several miles of the Pacific Crest Trail up in the Spanish Needles section of Sequoia National Forest. We went out twice for 10 day primitive spikes (10 days camping & working) for a total of 20 days, butt-bustin' all the way. We built rock walls across draws, & topped out the trail on a ridge overlooking the Mojave desert. We even saw a UFO! I worked the pulaski.

That section of the PCT was one of the last needed to complete the 1500 mile trail, from Canada to Mexico.

Cool wyrd! Since I've been helping with the CT, I've really gotten an appreciation for all the long trails out there. Even the short ones for that matter. It's very hard work and it seems like your really getting a lot done and when you walk back over it, it's not as far as it seemed. LOL.
I got a lot of respect for anyone that puts time into building & maintaining trails!

Hey wyrd, was that the California Conservation Corps you were in? I was in the California CCC in the late 1970s. Was a great experience. Saw LOTS of backcountry the general public never sees, or even could imagine exists.

I also loved those pulaskis. What a great tool.

And I know what you mean Dude about the progress you make building trails. Takes a long time and lotsa sweat to hack out even a short section.

RE: Bustin more new trail
Yeah, Steve - the ol' California Conservation Corps! I was in for two years, ended up a Crewleader; best time I ever had, and I met my wife there. I've met many ppl from the C's over the years, & every one of 'em benefitted from their experience. We've got great memories.
