I like green tea, too, but I can't live without coffee. I've tried many times. I frequently cut back to just 2 cups, but I've never totally quit for longer than a year. I just enjoy it too much, the aroma, the taste, the steam, it is a great part of life.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
I sling them grounds! It?s good for the soil and I?m not in bear country.

Has anybody else read about all the bad stuff in coffee? I read on another board that coffee that is not organically grown has a higher concentration of chemicals and pesticides in it that any other food product we take in. Because it is grow in countries where they can use just about any old pesticide, they use some of the really nasty stuff the US has banned. What?s worse is that they leave it on the beans. They don?t even wash the beans because it removes oils and can cause molding in transit. All these chemicals on the plants is also harmful for the workers in the field too. I have switched to organic and it does make a notable difference. I don?t crash nearly as bad as I did before (I?m a pot a morning guy). You can find brands like Seattle?s Best (I think) that are no more expensive too.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
Thanks for the info, Nigal. Can you order it online? I haven't seen any organic grown coffee, except the health food store where it is way too expensive.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
I found it at the grocery store and the stuff I got was more. In comparing prices it does look like the organic is a couple bucks more. Star Bucks andthe like run about $7.50 and the Seattle's Best is about $9.50.

Seattle's Best

I guess Seattle is good for something besides minor league football (Seahawks).

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
Cook's Corner has a couple of organic, shade grown coffees. That's the place that small-batch roasts their own that I told you about on the trail coffee thread.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
This weekend I'm carrying as much weight in coffee as my sleeping bag weighs. Some things are just worth it.

IMHO, Starbucks organic is better than SBC's.

Nigey, the Seachickens beat the other minor league football team...the BROWNS. Hmmm, their only loss. Amazing!

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
Thanks for the tip about all the bad stuff in coffee Nige. I had planned to quit drinking coffee after my last hike but caved. I drink 10+ cups a day but being on the trail I get only one. Now I'm gonna try for real.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
But kleetn, Starbucks isn't actually selling their organic coffee online, it's not listed in their online menu anywhere. Must be a seasonal item. I was checking Starbucks before you posted. My sister-in-law works their in Seattle, I'll ask her for the details of organic availability.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
The difference between Starbucks/Seattles Best and the ones that tehipte and I posted links to is how long the beans sit around after roasting. The former are several months old when you get them, the small roasters are a few days old at most. It makes a BIG difference in flavor.

Also, the larger roasters take 2-5 minutes to roast while Cook's Corner takes 10-15. The beans get roasted all the way through, not burnt on the outside and raw on the inside.

Think microbrew vs. "Gimme whatever you got on tap".

I was going to order from Cook's, Violin, just because I love their write-up on the Peru organically grown coffee. It sounds like a harsh, but beautiful place. I hope that those people get more than pennies per pound for all their hard work.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
Lyndy, you're right, it doesn't look like you can order it online. But isn't there a Starbucks on every corner in the US now?

You might check out Fonte Coffee. That's where we buy ground coffee for work. They're just down the street and the smell is soooo good when I drive by.

RE: Used Coffee Grounds
Try putting your coffee grounds in a batch of chili...makes bowel movements easy as pie....LOL. Now that is bad for the enviorment. Probably kill the next thirty hikers who pass by. I am pretty sure the UN has labled it chemicaly warefare.
