I agree, gas. Mileage to the Sierras is 212 mi (Lone Pine) to 317 (Mammoth) for me one way. I drive a SUV, so its a gas hog. Its a '99, and has 73K mi so far.

Greatest Hiking Reward? Too great to name
The rental car. Man they got me for $168 for ONE WEEKEND. The airfare was cheaper than that.

Oh, but about the money thing

Depends where but usually it's the food and booze. And if you go to Yosemite, $20 friggin' bucks to get in. Sheesh.

I saw it but don't ever get out to National parks that often on account that you can't take a mutt on the trails. However, I reeeeeealy dug Yosemite and imagine I will be heading back at least once more this year.

Biz, mail a letter to a media outlet with white powder in it. Make sure your name and address is on the envelope. You'll at least get interrogated for a few days. Lol

RE: Greatest Hiking Expense...
Backpacking in general is more expensive than my pocket can take. I don't own any real gear gear yet. Everytime I look, I have to admit the reality is that I have alot of other life expenses (shelter, food, a baby). That's why I'm working toward a degree. Hopefully I'll score a higher paying job w/ it and then I can have all sorts of gear. I'll start a gear thread to end all gear threads. You guys can help outfit me from the ground up. One plus, living in MT means very little travel cost. Yellowstone, Glacier, the Beartooths, and less than a million people, why go anywhere else!?

RE: Greatest Hiking Expense...
Newgirl, you are not supposed to tell people that. You tell them that the west sucks, expenses are outrageous, the climate is either too hot or too cold, the roads to the trailheads are two-track logging roads, etc. Now, do you want to restate your post?

RE: Greatest Hiking Expense...
Chief, thanks for the chastisement (did I spell that right). Let me say that again.

With all the militia types running around, the completely unpredictable and mostly terrible weather, and having to dodge logging trucks going about 100 mph on the way to trails, there is really no reason to bp in MT. Oh yeah and I would also definitely not bp in WY (same probs. as MT).

Was that better?
