Linville Gorge

“I may be heading to Linville Gorge in a few weeks for a first time hike and I'm in need of any info you guys can pass along. For one, I don't have a map yet so I haven't been able to plan on an exact route, so I was hoping someone could recomend some. I'm looking to do a 3 day hike, and of course one that gives the great views. Are there any loops that could be done in that period of time? If not, how difficult is it to arrange a shuttle? Any help will be greatly appreciated.”

“What about the trail heads? Are they secure for your car? Or is that something I'll need to worry about?”

“Fasttimes, depending on how far you are from East TN, and East KY.. there are two TT hikes going on in about a week. One is at Red River Gorge, and the other is at Roan Mt.

As for parking at the trailheads, aside from a few well-known 'bad' locations (which happens at any trail), most trailheads are relatively safe.

Have you contacted some of the local hiking groups in that area yet?”

“Exactly.. and I also know of two Smokies trips planned for the month of November that I got invited to, and two trips in December -- the point being that there is never an excuse to hike alone, unless you choose it.

There are plenty of friends right here, ready to suggest a hike in your area, that have DONE the hike before, and have ALREADY done the research you are trying to get accomplished.

“I have spent time in the gorge before...there is fantastic hiking there. There is a great hike that goes down the gorge and up to the Chimmneys. If you plan it right you can get there in time to see the sun set over the whole gorge area getting a fantastic veiw of Table rock Mtn...A bit of Elevation gane if your from the flat lands thought. Best time I ever had thought !”

No matter what, looked like it would've been prolly only me and him anyway. Meaning I would've canceled anyway. Don't know him, and I don't backpack with total strangers unless they are longtime TTers. :) So, it doesn't really matter. Still, he could've at least emailed or something.

“I didn't notice your trip posted regarding Linville Gorge, but it is one of the places I would hope to hike one day. Please keep me in mind, if you should decide to go.”
