Self Description

“My mother is from the deep south and my father is a Yankee. When I describe myself, I might say that I am an accountant, or an east coaster or an Irish American. I would never think of describing myself as a southerner or a Yankee. Why is it that many people in the south identify themselves as southerners, or others as Yankees, like this is more important than other self identifying information? I have always wondered at this. Maybe it has to do with whether you moved around a lot as a kid versus living in the same community as your parents and grandparents all your life. I am not trying to be derogatory here, just curious.”
