Totally Reforming
Ok, I have been working out everyday. Lifting weights, running, step aerobics. If I keep it up, do you think I will be strong enough to do Rainier next summer?

Kleety is my hero!!!!

(I am also giving up beer)

RE: Totally Reformed
That should do ya. Be sure to get some high altitude training in, too. You need to know how your body will respond. I have a friend who gets real sick at about 10,000. It's good to know if you plan on doing Rainier.

RE: Totally Reformed
phsttt! You're right. Might as well finish off this 48 pack.. then I'm giving up beer.

Is there any justifiable reason to give up beer? Seriously?

Oh yeah I forgot to mention: lots of beer is good for altitude training.

Biz, if I am your hero, you may want to seek the advice of a mental health professional.

I wish Tea would start a thread called 'how to look smart in the woods.' That would be useful.

RE: Totally Reformed
Give a woman a map, and she'll be lost for a day. Teach her how to read a map and she'll give up drinking and think she can climb Mt. Rainier.

RE: Totally Reformed
Hey, Biz. You should definitely get some running in. You should get on that Christensen Trail down there and hit the hills. That thing's a monster. If you added that in once a week (along with your other mileage) you'd really be an aerobic animal, not to mention buns of steel!

RE: Totally Reformed
I run 80 miles a week just so I can drink Guinness. I think it's about 300 cal/can. 2 cans/day, that's worth about 40 miles!

squats, lunges, deadlifts, leg extentions, hams, calves and run uphill until you throw up - then do it again.

You can be in the best shape in yer life...but if you don't aclimate to the altitude...you're doomed!

RE: Totally Reformed
its a crap shoot - you could get there and be in excellent shape and not do the altitude. I take Diamox before I go out west, being a flatlander and all. Also find out what your heart rate should be for endurace - not for fat burning. Example; I am 40 with a resting heart rate of 54, so the trainer said that I should be at 140/150 for fat burining, but spiking at 170 for endurance.

RE: Totally Reformed
The last few months before your Rainier trip, I'd wear your boots and loaded pack on a treadmill, or hike up a nearby hill if you have one. The closer to the trip, the more weight you should carry, and the longer and faster you should go. Also in the last few months, try to climb some high elevation peaks, like 2 or 3 above 10,000, carrying a heavy pack, and hiking a lot of miles. 10,000 feet of elevation gain in a weekend is a good goal.
