RE: TT Artists
I hold a BFA with a concentration in painting and drawing (my wife does too.) Some work in private, corporate and university collections. Most of it is in my spare room. I'm currently an internet designer.
I play trumpet, baritone, bass guitar and have a drum machine that doesn't get much action these days. Used to be in a post-punk rock band (that went nowhere)

RE: TT Artists
For wolfsister...

-----------------
The forest is still
There is no breeze at all
Every breath is a mist
This crisp morning, late fall.

Wolfsister walks
Hears the crunch of the snow
The sun is just rising
She has noplace to go.

So she puts on her snowshoes
And throws on a pack
With plenty of water,
A sandwich, a snack.

For two hours, three,
She is one with the woods
Moving easily, silently,
As a wolf-sister should.

It is peace, it is beauty,
It is magic, it's bliss
It is wonderfully created
Just for moments like this.

For the heaven's declare Him
The sun, stars, and moon
And the earth sings His praises,
The "Creator tune."

With that song in her heart
Dear wolfsister rests
Knowing what is important,
Knowing she has been blessed.

RE: TT Artists
Arclite, I envy your satisfaction with the profession. After 20 years of doing this sh*t, I have come to the sad conclusion that architecture sucks. Coming out of college I thought this was art, but all I have done is dance to the whip crack of greedy developers with no vision, creating and encouraging un-sustainable sprawl that squanders precious non-renewable resources. Will have to move on real soon.

My art is photography. I've shown is some juried competitions at several galaries and museums (the B&W street photography stuff). Landscape photography in the great out o' doors is a whole lot of fun, too. Wouldn't want to rely on it for a living, though.

RE: TT Artists
Fritz, I liked your poem.

Hey, BobK, I think a lot of people get to feel that way over time. The reality of how money, not art or appreciation of nature, or even appreciation of humanity, drives the world, can get depressing. But it is the reality and we don't have to like it.

If I'd of stayed in college I'd have a BFA now, probably speciallizing in painting and drawing. Wish I'd of done more with ceramics. As it is, I play with my paints and pencils and markers and crayons whenever I feel like it and still love them because I don't have to do anything with them for $.

I would love to illustrate childrens' books. Someday I just might.

RE: TT Artists
Sorry to hear thatBobK but I do understand. I could also complain that it's not just the developers. Hardly anybody wants to pay for good work. I mostly design hospitals and healthcare facilities so much of the satisfaction is in the complexity of the projects. I am usually given a bit more money and free reign than in many other bldg types. If I can argue persuasively enough, I can get the money folks to spend a little more now, for a more pleasing healthcare environment and better life-cycle cost. According to my Meyers-Briggs ENTJ-INTJ profile, apparently I can argue fairly persuasively.

But I understand the frustration. I don't design many houses because many folks feel that they can do a better job at designing them than I can. And because they want the most space for the cheapest cost. Look at most of the junk people live in. It's not energy efficient and the space does not inspire. Most buildings just take up beautiful land. I understand completely, BobK.

RE: TT Artists
BobK alot of us feel that way about our work.

That's why I got out of print. I used to get people who insisted on making me print the ugliest and rudest things on the planet or worse yet getting me to design them.

The t-shirt industry was the worst of all. The lowest was when a former employer dropped a job on me that was shirts for a racist group. (Please no ignorant Republican or Limbaugh comments I'm talking aboout Aryan Nation here)When I protested he told me money was money, just print it. I refused.

Folks the issue is not what they are selling its what we are buying. I mean that in every way possible. Just refuse if you can.

Yes, I'm sure I am not the only one who is less then thrilled with his job. But darn it, it was supposed to have been ART! Boy, they sure sold us a bill of goods in arch. school...

Still, the job brings in enough cash for me to buy the occassional piece of expensive camera gear and the almost as expensive backpacking gear. That will do for now while I ponder my options.

I have no art at all and I know no skill
but, I have a hard head and an iron will
every fork in the road, I take a wrong turn
I can see it coming on, but I`ll never learn
my biggets fear and it still fills me with fright
I can`t spell at all so, I just hate to write
but, it was just my luck so, what the heck
writing was all I could do, after the wreck
much better now, but I got hung with a curse
I write my thoughts, but they come out in verse
to late I found out, or I never would have start
it`s just bad luck for me,... No, I have no art

RE: TT Artists
Hmmmm. I once skateboarded religiously. I ate, drank, worked and slept skating ever since I can remember.

In the mid-80s I rode for a team on the E coast and got to travel and do demos, judge and enter contests. Then I thought of what I had and what I wanted out of life, and somehow I ended up back at college.

In College Writing II I had to write a paper on either art, literature or music...so I did one on skateboarding. "The Art Of Skateboarding" was the thesis. I used the premises that the sport is (actually) very creative. You can skateboard your whole life and never learn all there is to it...and all the combinations and variations of moves added to the creative artform. Another premise was that some people can enjoy an activity to such a point that it becomes an artform to them, even though some may not see it that way.

The kinetics of movement was compared to that of ballet, and as a visual aid I did a video of me doing all kinds of moves, but in slo-mo and to the tune of The Blue Danube by Strauss.

The prof dug it. She brought in a TV/VCR, read the paper to the class and showed the video.

Anyways...it's funny you brought up our "personal" art. Brings back fond memories!

I'll agree with you there Buddur. One of my favorite boyfriends was a skater. I'd go out to a big ol barn w a half pipe that took up all of it and watch (and smoke). Sometimes it seemed like those guys floated above the rim forever.

Hey, kleetn, when you comin' east for your next fitting? I love to see you do your little turn on the catwalk.

I've got a plan BobK. During semi-retirement, I'm going to buy pieces of land and do some spec houses. It may not be very lucrative, but it will be artistically fulfilling. Imagine designing structures of high quality materials that are in harmony with their environment?

RE: TT Artists
Arclite, you have read my mind. I just got done gutting my house and totally re-doing everything, including the space plan. Turned a real sows ear into a silk purse, and had the most fun I have had in years. My builder neighbor tells me he makes 25% profit on $400K houses. Build two houses a year, and the profit would be... yeah, I could live on that!

WHAT? Who's driving this crazy boat? You make your own reality. You are reality. If you want to appreciate art or nature, get out there and do it. If you want to free your mind, do so. We live in the greatest country in the world where people have CHOICE. Try growing up in a communist country where you are afraid to smile at strangers in the street and you don't really know what freedom is. We have freedom yet we make our own prisons. Keeping up with the Joneses--I don't even know who they are.

I teach Art, Photography and Computer Art - public high school. I've worked with many media over the years (you have to in order to teach this stuff), and have especially enjoyed drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics. But I'd have to say that my favorite medium has always been Light (Photography). Lately I've been enjoying the new medium of 1's and 0's (Computer Art).
