Casual Encounters
Anyone ever met anyone pretty ODD on the trail, downright creepy?

So far everyone I have met on the trail was really nice.

RE: Casual Encounters
Do you mean odd (as in weird) or are you refering to something else? The very, very old naked guy at the hotsprings on my first trip was odd.

RE: Casual Encounters
Newgirl, that works.

The creepiest guy I ever met on the trail was on acid I think.

RE: Casual Encounters
The oddest thing I've ever seen on the trail was a couple black guys wearing bear bells on their boots on the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska.

RE: Casual Encounters
That old guy was odd, because I have no idea how he got up there w/out oxygen.

RE: Casual Encounters
Chip has probably been talked about by more people who think he is weird than any other trail found person

We're all a bit odd or we wouldn't be out there.

RE: Casual Encounters
Unfriendly people on the trail seem really odd to me. If the common interest of the outdoors isn't enough to get people to relax I can't imnagine what they're doing out there in the first place. But, maybe that makes me the odd one?

RE: Casual Encounters
I've run into a couple of people who's heads were not completely screwed on, but nobody weird enough to consider hosing down with the bear spray. Good manners seem to be the rule rather then then the exception. Even with those soley interested in being left alone.

Most people I have met on the trail didn't live much longer for me to judge them. Its weird how accedents happen.

JMZ, Maybe you're the nut that they are talking about.

RE: Casual Encounters
Two crazy indians (sorry, I know this is un PC) chased us on an indian res in N. Arizona (they had a truck, we were walking). As they threw empty beer cans at us I think they were cursing 'give us a six pack of beer...or the girl'

Surely, your friends kept the six pack.

RE: Casual Encounters
Now that you mention it, there *was* that one time...

Not on the trail, per se, but we met this guy at a trailhead once. He was dressed in camouflage with a shaved head, combat boots, a big knife and the biggest damn Doberman I ever saw. He was heading down into Linville Gorge -- going to "run down to the river and back in about an hour".

I didn't feel it was my job to remind him that dogs weren't allowed down there.

He seemed a little jumpy --- and we trucked on outta there.

RE: Casual Encounters
Hmmm, odd..... I'd say there are always some odd ones... And fortunately we can out walk them or tell them they have to go. But in the wilderness there is not near as many as in the cities of So Calif.
The few in the mountains seem sane in comparison.
