New Toy for me!View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 17 of 17 messages posted.
New Toy for me! “Broke down & bought myself an eTrex Venture GPS unit for my B'day. So far, a lot of fun, but of course I've already found out I also need to purchase a software upgrade to my TOPO program in order to download waypoints into it...oh well, another unforseen $45.00. My thoughts were that it would be a handy tool to have in more than a few situations... I've lost trails in the snow, couldn't take bearings on anything due to very poor visability, etc., so I sold this to the boss as a safety item. She bought it hook line & sinker since I also drag our son out with me. She wants HIM to be safe & come home, she is up in the air about me sometimes...” 7:35:38 PM 10/14/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Cool, I am actually thinking about asking for one for Christmas this year.” 7:37:36 PM 10/14/01 RE: New Toy for me! “LOL Good for you, Wanderer and happy belated birthday! As for me, I think I'd like to get lost in the snow. hmmmm....” 7:38:32 PM 10/14/01 RE: New Toy for me! “I must admit I have been tempted - not for any hiking purpose but so that I could tell other people where I found some non-common plant or other item of interest and so that I could find my way back to the same items of interest. Sometimes when bushwacking I come across old blazes and it would be goo to plot them on a map to see where the old trail might have gone.” 7:46:48 PM 10/14/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Mr.Wanderer...you ought to be able to manually create a waypoint and then change the UTM to the position of the waypoint of interest. You'd first have to *know/find out* the position of that waypoint first. But it'd save you $45. Congrats on yer new toy. I use my GPS frequently.” 10:17:25 PM 10/14/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Boy howdy! I have been thinking about one but just can't comit to tech stuff. I do however have a gear-woody for a Sunto wrist top computer. They have a beautiful stainless steel model out now that is well worth the money. But then again, I saw the new Schrade i-QUIP on page 105 of the new backpacker and nearly messed my pants half way through reading the discription! I can't find it on their web site and don't have any idea what the price will be but I dubt I will care. I WANT IT!” 10:30:24 AM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “I called schrade and asked about the price of the I-Quip and they said sugested retail will be $250.” 11:37:03 AM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Mr.Nigal, check Ebay for a Vector. I checked it once, a while ago, and they had many up for bid...and cheap, too (~$100).” 11:42:48 AM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Well...here's the best deal.” 11:45:28 AM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “At first I thought this thread was in ref. to bacpac and his lady friends.” 3:56:28 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “well if you really want to know when I first saw this thread I thought "hummm ... a new B.O.B."” 4:02:28 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! 4:10:53 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Glad I wasn't the only one.” 4:23:37 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “I-Quip is too expensive for what you get IMO” 4:50:28 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Nigal - I've got a Suunto Vector and I love it. I love all the tech-toys. Wanderer - I went geo-caching for the first time last week. It was a great time. Found the first cache I looked for right away, and I was the first person to find that one! Spent several hours looking for the next one, and didn't find it. Had lots of fun though! I really enjoy uploading my trail to my mapping software and seeing the birds-eye view of where I went and what was /is around the next bend.” 9:46:09 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “yeah, Hog and Newgirl..I thought Town Dawg had finally posted a decent thread we could ALL post too..LOL Newgirl, one minor correction, Bacpac doesn't have any "Lady Friends", at least that's not what the ones with the wool still on them are called. How are Yew (by the way?) Tex” 11:28:13 PM 10/15/01 RE: New Toy for me! “Tex, U R baaaaaad!!! Is it virgin wool U R talking about?” 12:46:10 AM 10/16/01
