RE: What was the most heart pounding moment
I don't know why but I never seem to get scared when I am sure I should be. It is always later when I think about it.

mediaman-- I know just the place at Deer Creek you are talking about. It spooks a lot of people. My bummer over there was on the other side from where you were. We had come over by the river route from Tapeats. This was a long time ago before there was a well worn trail. We were just route finding--anyway we went all the way to the narrows and side hilled in some really soft stuff above the crack you describe. Near the river it is a couple hundred feet drop. Hated to go forward--couldn't go back.

While crossing a glacier and feeling every stone on the glacier buzzing. Climbing unroped up a Scree slope in Nepal in cloud, then realizing how exposed it was when the clouds parted.

Oh bacpac--you're showin your age. I have blended trifocals. Those $300 specks are gonna make you think you are stoned--walking a foot off the floor until you get used to them.

Well, there was one time when I went around a bend and came upon a nekkid girl bathing herself. She was facing the other way, so she didn't see me. I stood there with my jaw down to my knees. After a while she noticed me, turned bright red and took off. Running by me while picking up her clothes. I was so stunned I didn't even get a chance to ask for her name and number.

RE: What was the most heart pounding moment
I had a pretty scare while traversing a steep snow slope in the north cascades. It was a high route called the Ptarmigan traverse, and our packs were about 75 pounds, with ropes, food for 7 days, and cold weather gear. I was not wearing crampons, and slipped on the snow slope, which was about 100 feet above a cliff that dropped off 200 feet. I went into a self arrest, and dug my ice axe in and put my weight on it. I kept sliding, due to the weight of the pack, and the soft snow. I was digging my feet in, my elbows, and doing a push up on the ice axe, but I was still going down. I felt my feet go over the edge, then my knees, and then I was in the air, falling backwards. I fell about 10 feet, and hit a ledge. In any other place along the cliff, I would have gone a lot farther. The fall was broken by my pack, which broke the waist belt. I climbed out and continued on to camp for the day.
