I had to go to a seminar for my ethics class after I met Aero tonight. I should be writing the paper about it now, before the baby decides she needs a 2 AM bottle, but TT is way more interesting.

Heh Heh.... I'm just finishing up the midterm that I'm giving to my Intro to Psychology Students in 7 hours. Just 9 more multiple choice questions to make up.

I was gonna finish making up the other midterm (Child Psychopathology), but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Welcome to the Psychiatric Hotline.
If you are obsessive-compulsive, please press 1 repeatedly.
If you are co-dependent, please ask someone to press 2.
If you have multiple personalities, please press 3, 4, 5, and 6.
If you are paranoid-delusional, we know who you are and what you want. Just stay on the line so we can trace the call.
If you are schizophrenic, listen carefully and a little voice will tell you which number to press.
If you are depressed, it doesn't matter which number you press. No one will answer.
If you are delusional and occasionally hallucinate, please be aware that the thing you are holding on the side of your head is alive and about to bite off your ear.

Just got back from the ET II test. Does anyone know the friction coefficient of a cement pipe? I sure the heck don't. Oh well, better luck next time right? The test still hasn't been graded but I don't think I made the list.

I have 40 quizzes to grade. Normally that isn't too bad, but I gave them a question where they would have to both think AND know what they were doing. We'll see what happens.

LOL! Phil, I am learning what kind of disastrous results can come from trying to get people to think on tests.

I gotta learn to stop giving essay questions.

It is a learning experience, teaching undergrads for the first time in 10 years.

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
Can't sleep? Read this:How to Study

Ped - I teach mostly juniors and seniors so it is not as bad as it could be. Some of my students can barely read or write English which creates the most problems for me. What gives me some credibility is that 1/5 of the class will get a perfect grade. That takes the wind out of the sails of the complainers.

Sometimes I put old quizzes on my website as a study guide. It is one of the best things I have ever done...they have to work out those problems which is a forced study period.

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
Phil,

I would be glad to help some of your students learn English as a second language. If Farsi or Arabic is their first language have them send me an email.

I don't know how much credibility you get if non-English speaking students can pass and that 20% of the students get A's. What ever happened to grading on the curve?
bacpac

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
bacpac - Grading on thecurve (using athe normal distribution or "bell curve") or by ranking students from high to low and grouping them, is still around, but, IMHO, has been replaced with better grading schemes (if you must have grading).

At our university, basing grades on how you did relative to the rest of the class was officially changed in 1983 to grading based on what you know and can do. Consequently, I have had classes with lots of A's and some classes with very few. I remember one classe recently where I gave only one A in the entire class of seniors:

A
Superior Work - Reflects originality and independent work and a thorough mastery of the subject matter/skill: achievement so outstanding that it is normally attained by students doing truly exemplary work.
.
B
Very Good Work - Indicates clearly better than adequate competence in the subject matter/skill; achievement of quality higher than adequate, but not of exemplary quality.
.
C
Adequate Work - Indicates that classroom work, outside assignments, and examinations have been completed at a level indicating adequate competence in the subject matter/skill.

D
Minimally Acceptable Work - Indicates achievement which meets the minimum requirements of the course, but at a level indicating less than adequate competence in the subject matter/skill.

F
Unacceptable Work - Indicates achievement that fails to meet the minimum requirements of the course and is clearly below university quality; not a passing grade.

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
bacpac - Oh, yes. My non-English proficient students are primarily Vietnamese. There are so many Vietnamese here that it is too easy for them not to learn English. Just for kicks, in that class I have:

20 Vietnamese surnames (I think they they like me!)
5 Chinese/other Asian surnames
5 Hispanic surnames
4 Middle eastern surnames
2 Japanese surnames
4 European surnames

Many, of course, were born here and speak fluent English.

We do have a lot of faculty and students who speak Arabic and Farsi. There is a very large Persian community in So. Calif.

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
Phil... that is a great study guide. If I get ambitious, I'll try to think of what a Humanities version would look like.

Right now, I wish everyone was required to read Mortimer Adler's book: "How to read a book."

I was a bit un-nerved last week when I retreived the statistics on grades given out in my Department. About 40% of the grades were A's for upper level courses..... C's were very rare.

RE: The I Should Be Studying Thread
Professor Milsom has suggested that it was the development of the real property actions in England that allowed England to avoid the equivalent of the French Revolution in the eighteenth century. Assuming that the French Revolution was, at least in part, based on a reaction to the absolute power of the aristocracy over both the peasants and, to a lesser but still significant degree, the rising middle class, do you agree with Professor Milsom or not and why?
And we haven't discussed the French Revolution AT ALL nor have any of the assigned Milsom readings touched on it. Plus, my knowledge of said revolution is of undergraduate vintage, most of which has faded completely away. DAMN.
