'If ya can't find it, grind it', right?” 12:34:13 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “a typical trail breakfast for me if I have the time to boil some water is grits and oatmeal - two packs of each - results in some interesting flavors cause I get the mixed flavor boxes of each then just grab the number I need when packing up. Bacon plus maple is actually fairly good.” 8:04:35 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “My dream, or maybe it's just a fantasy, is to leave the industrial sector and find something more worthwhile. 24 years in engineering for the big automotive companies have left me jaded and disillusioned. None of it matters much. I want to make more of a contribution. When my kids were younger I volunteered at their school once or twice a month. I think I'd like to be an elementary school teacher. The kids at that age are like sponges, and a teacher who can relate to them can make a huge difference in their lives. But the reality is difficult. I don't have the schooling I'd need and I'd have to give up a good salary to retrain.” 8:10:14 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “chili, there is no doubt that KC is not a Southern town. Heavily influenced by the South, but not officially in the South anymore. The barbeque is a source of pride, though.” 8:27:40 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Not necessarily true Le Subtil. You would take a salary hit but it might not be so bad. My father put in 20 years in the Navy and when he left the service he became a school teacher. Beacuse he had "real world knowledge and experience" they started him out at the pay level of a 13 year teacher. Keep in mind my dad is teaching electronics at a vocational education high school and not elementary. If you really want to make a difference right now, volunteer your time to work with kids. There are several agencies that would love your help. Just to name a few, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, The Sierra Club also puts together camping and backpacking trips for underprivledged kids. There is a lot you can do without taking the big salary hit but you will still have to go back to the grind everyday. The only thing is that the grind won't seem so bad. At least it doesn't in my case. I volunteer my time as a Scoutmaster of a local Scout troop and I have to say it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I have done a lot of volunteer work over the years but nothing beats helping a kid realize their potential. I found working with adults way too depressing cause there is so much mental and emotional baggage that it gets overwhelming.” 8:33:19 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Divorce=Paradigm!” 8:33:39 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Mmmmmmm..... Cheese grits. Glad to have ya Arclite.” 8:35:26 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Le Subtil, there is a big shortage of teachers developing (in NJ at least). If you think you can handle the sound of loud high pitched voices all day everyday, I think you should go for it. My daughter's first grade teacher is getting married, and I asked my daughter what she thought we should get the teacher for a wedding gift. My daughter thought for a minute, and said,"Well, she always says that she wishes she could have kids like us, maybe we can give her a baby in her tummy!" Hmmm, I don't think we'll go there, hon. I had a good laugh!” 8:56:22 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “I had grits for breakfast. Can I be a Southerner too?” 10:56:12 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “kiss my grits! LOL, LyndyS!!! what, is that out of the question or something??” 11:16:59 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Violin, say "Forget, Hell!" a thousand times, and your in!” 11:43:26 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “I just realized my intended audience probably couldn't understand my last post. Here's the translation: Ah et grits fo' bustfast. Kin ah be a rebel too?” 11:51:14 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “I met this great guy last week, and he loves to hike, too...” 11:59:04 AM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift 12:12:48 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift 12:16:29 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “HOW did you do that?!? hahahhahahaha!!” 12:24:57 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “lyra, check out violin's first link. There are a bunch of different dialects to choose from. Here's the one for Jive.” 12:30:52 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Well, darn. Didn't quite work right, but just select a dialect, and then hit "Dialectize!" to see the results.” 12:33:13 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “yyyeeessss!! jive is awesome :-D i'm going to start "dialectizing" al of my e-mails...” 12:35:15 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “and in addition to Al, i'll dialectize all of my e-mails.” 12:38:16 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “You taklkin' to me, hpm? I don't need it.” 1:39:35 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Little lady, would you like me to show you some card tricks? I get enough of that at work, hpm. I'm always teasing the good ol' boys about their english. At least I think that's what they're speaking most of the time. "That dog won't hunt", is a favorite. So is, "No hill for a climber."” 2:45:54 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “I remember when I first heard the "dog won't hunt" phrase. I just stared at the guy. My latest fave is "If you are waiting on me, then you are backing up." Say what?!” 3:02:21 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “Le Subtil, I volunteer at the h.s. I graduated from. The kids relate because I am not sooooo much older and I know I have made a difference. It is very rewarding. Just ask, there are alot of places that aren't necessarily advertising the need but would gladly take a volunteer or two.” 3:12:36 PM 10/18/01 RE: Paradigm Shift “I got some for ya, hpm.
