Sunset A Flower Grasshopper” 2:48:25 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Hey, that flower is a great photo! Sounds like a good camera. Show us some more please.” 3:03:16 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “those pictures are beautiful!” 3:13:26 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Are those raw photos? If so, they are outstanding.” 3:15:29 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “wow! man, i need to reconsider that digital deal!” 3:15:38 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “I now only use digital cameras. I don't trust the bozos at the photomart with my images and can't afford to keep taking my stuff to a color lab. Noit to mention that it's a pain to scan everything in.” 3:19:17 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “I am with you rad, this changes my way of thinking.” 3:41:25 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Thanks Y'all hpm...I resized them to 5x7 they were 13x17 right out of the camera. On the "Fine" setting they come out 17x22 or something huge like that. The software that comes with the camera is cool...just plug in the USB cable and turn the camera on and up comes the program with all the new pictures. If you click on the slideshow button it presents the pictures as a full screen (19" monitor here) slideshow...nice way to view your photos! New pack and new camera .....I need to get out of Dodge!!!” 3:45:10 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Here are a few more taken just minutes ago :) Don't mind me I'm just playing. Roxy Our Pug Rose #1 Rose # 2” 5:39:08 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos 5:43:35 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Wind Walker, I love your pics. It's good to be close to your subject most times, good going. I can't believe the crispness and color rendition on that last rose. Hubby & I take great pictures with our digital, and it's only a 1.3. We got one when they first came out. How many pixels is your camera?” 6:12:11 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Thanks, Lipstick Hiker it's a 2.0” 6:16:28 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Impressive! Roxy's expression is classic! Ya got a good deal! Isn't it fun?, no film to buy and develop, no bad shots ya have to live with.....not to mention the instant gratification thing.” 7:02:17 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Brownie Instamatic. Challenge that!” 7:12:31 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Classic” 7:15:11 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Son of a...those are beautiful! May I inquire as to the cost and stats of the camera? I'm getting one for the holidays and know next to nothing about digitals.” 7:26:05 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “$299.00 weight 7oz 2.0 million pixels Image file sizes ...1,600 x 1,200 1,280 x 960 or 640 x 480 Zoom 3x optical, 2.5x digital 1.8 inch LCD Monitor It came with a 16 meg smart card and I purchased an additional 64 meg smart card for $49.95 the 64 meg card can hold 82 to 306 pics depending on res.” 7:36:29 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “Wow! Those are nice! Can those be enlarged to 2' x 3'? About those bozos: On our JMT trip, I turned in 27 rolls of film, and 1/2 of them had scratches across them (scratches were even on the CDs, which I've been getting to save time on scanning).” 7:53:04 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “The horror! That's exactly what I'm talking about. I once had someone mix the chemicals improperly and MELTED 6 rolls of film. Those scratches can be edited out digitally. I do it all the time.” 7:57:36 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “I've used slr's for years and a digital for 6 monthes, and unless I have any long range shot's to take, I use the digital every time, get the NiMH batteries though, high resolutions eat em up fast. If you have some photo's with flaws and scratches, try out the Photsuite III software, it's less than $10 most places and can do all kinds of great stuff.” 10:00:43 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “The scratches are across the top, sometimes the middle and sometimes the bottom, across the WHOLE picture. Looks like it happened during developing. I'll have the JMT page up next week. Each roll had the scratch/streak in a different spot. I bought the warranty with the camera...they said if they can't fix it they'll replace it. Heheheh, they didn't know how much I use this camera, and how abused it gets.” 10:01:59 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “I have one pic I like a lot that has a river, smooth as glass, but I can't reduce the file size without dithering the river. Wish I knew more about how to work with these images... I have the Kodak DC4800 and I like it a lot.” 10:03:58 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos 11:19:25 PM 10/19/01 RE: Digital Photos “those are some wicked pics.. i dig the lighting on the flowers.” 12:09:30 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “Ms.2001, those scratches on your photos are printer scratches. Check your negatives. When the lab gets yer film, it's connected to about 50 other rolls of film, then sent through the processing stages...develop negatives, print film, develop film, etc. Usually the scratches are from when the developed negatives are sent through the automatic printers. And many scratches will occur if the printer is not checked and kept clean. By the time the scratches are caught...it's too late for the affected negatives...and your roll isn't the only one scratched. This happens more than you think.” 12:15:21 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “I just bought the fuji fine pix 1300 1.3 about a month ago. Only cost $145. Great camera and fun.I'll be using it in the spring to document my garden” 12:19:40 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “FYI, the pictures taken by Phil on the Llama Rama Hike were taken with his digital camera. And the pictures I took on the Pacific NW Trip were taken with my digital. I use a HP Photosmart 315, 2.1 Meg. resolution. I paid $299.00 but it can now be found cheaper. No more Film for me.” 12:45:09 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “Nice Photos man!!” 1:50:20 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “I take mostly digital pictures now with my Kodak Millenium 2000 gold. I can store 114 hi-res pics on my card. It is easy to convert to smaller image files for the web.” 2:33:36 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “Those are great pics Wind Walker. Very clear and crisp. I'm really impressed with those digital cameras. Too bad I don't have one yet...still using traditional cameras.” 3:41:43 AM 10/20/01 RE: Digital Photos “The latest issue of Consumer Reports tested 2 and 3 megapixel cameras.” 12:01:56 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “Thanks for the links and other info. It'll give me a leg up when I pick one out.” 12:06:48 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “OK, everybody, let's get a critical eye on these shots, hmmmmmm?? Details are looking a bit fuzzy on some. That would mean they are probably even fuzzier on the big shot? (cuz reducing will help sharpen a photo) How adjustable is the camera? On the shot of Roxy, the depth of field is pretty shallow. The flash really blasted out the color of the grasshopper. OK, I'm being very, VERY picky, but am wanting to make a few points. This camera looks pretty good. Heck, I can definitely see digital having a place. Just remember, however, digital prints fade. Digital shots are subject to becoming damaged and unusable (CORRUPTED) through NOTHING you do. Maybe you won't have a computer or e-mail to view shots. "real" cameras are still an important part of your photo arsenal. Just keep that in mind. :-)” 1:58:02 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “lizs has undisclosed stock in a photo finishing lab.” 2:14:00 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “Naw, Violin, lizs is a woman after my own heart. Besides, she has that big ol' bogen strapped to her pack, and it would look just plain foolish with a digital camera mounted on it! Film still beats digital in many ways, once you take control of the exposure and focusing process. Digital cameras have, however, been getting better and better, and for most people they are every bit as good as film cameras, particularly autofocus point & shoot cameras. Wind Walker, your photos show this. The pics are very nice, even if the flash did overpower the grasshopper in that one shot. Still, better overall exposure than with most autoexposure P&S cameras. But the main problem with digital is lack of the required digital resolution to get a large print. The largest you can go is about 8" x 10" before quality is noticably degraded. You really need between 200 and 300 pixels per inch to give good results. Even the very best digital SLR cameras (like the $3,000 Canon EOS D30) will only give you about an 8" x 10" at 200ppi. These cameras excel at getting images quickly to the photo editor, but if you want a really sharp 16" x 20" enlargement, the technology isn't there yet. Just something to ponder if you want really big enlargements from your photos.” 3:51:17 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “My previous camera was a $99 point and shoot Olympus with a small zoom. So I'm at home with a point and shoot digital :) I'm not into photography to the point that lizs must be. Reguarding the pic of Roxy...I was goofing off, I just leaned over and snapped the photo didn't even look through the view finder or have the monitor on. The grasshopper was only 2 or 3 " away from the flash ....probably should of shut the flash off ....just inexperience I guess. What do you want from a point and shoot man ;) My plans are to burn the pics to CDs (for backup copys and storage) Kind of like photo albums only much smaller and cheaper. I use this computer for the bookeeping(well sometimes) of my business ...so I will probably always have one.” 7:59:33 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “hehhhehee... nope, I don't own photo finishing stock (gosh if only I did!!) Just some things to think about. I have a feeling maybe 10-20 years from now, some people might be disappointed in having put the great majority of their photos into digital shots. (Then again..... mebbee not. But have you known the disappointment of going to open a photo and having it be "corrupted"...... it's not recoverable then. Keep that in mind, that's all) That said, anyone got a CHEAP Nikon Coolpix for sale. OH.... and Bob.......LOL....... you didn't see THIS shot, did you? LMAO!! (me THINKS you did!!!) It's just plain UNCANNY! (And HEY, ain't that a digital??!?)” 9:38:39 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos 10:08:40 PM 10/22/01 RE: Digital Photos “Cripes,Lizs, you carry all that while BPking? You one strong woman!!!” 12:10:29 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Haha! Stanlee, did you happen to notice the JEEP in her picture?” 12:18:21 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “It's a great Jeep, ain't it Nigal?? Thanks so much to your brother, Dirt Bag Larry, for selling it to me. Might he have another?? OH, he doesn't want it back, does he?!?? !!! would never give him back the Jeep!!!! LOL (P.S. The mirror, while not functional, NO LONGER IS HANGING OFF THE SIDE!! WAY!!!)” 6:09:00 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Hi Lizs. I saw the photo of you and your tripod on Phil's photo page, but thanks for the link to some of your photos. I will check them out later. I have one of those gawd awful heavy bogens myself. It's great for working out of the car, but I hate backbacking with it. I'm thinking a Gitzo or Slik carbon fiber tripod might be just what I need this year for xmas. Either that or the 400/600mm telephoto lens with the cool rifle stock support. I'm getting more and more of an urge to do more wildlife photography as well as landscape and the PJ style street stuff. Wind Walker, the Donahue Tarn shot is really nice! That's the kind of shot that begs for a good size enlargement!” 9:39:34 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “One of the major benefits for me of digital is the ability to take so many pictures and store them on a little card...without the cost of developing. I can store 114 hi-res pics on my 32M card. Then I print the ones I really want on photo paper. I only have a 3 color printer so even that can be improved. My digital camera takes as pictures just as good, if not better, than my APS point-and-shoot. 35mm with good film is still superior to my capability...but then it always has been. Just got a CD burner yesterday. I will back up my image files that way.” 9:55:44 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “You know what APS stands for don't you?” 10:22:02 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Is it anything like the PHD in PHD camera?” 10:25:34 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “I don't think so. That's Push Here Dummy, right? APS = A Peice of %@” 11:52:45 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Exactly, on both counts!” 11:53:42 AM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Yeah, you should go to BIGGER negatives if you want good quality. Like a medium format or large format camera. With APS it's just the opposite. While touted as a great little camera, the reality is the negs are maybe the size of one of your fingernails. Smaller than 35 mm negs. BAD NEWS for good quality.” 12:39:04 PM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “Lizs, I was going to email you privately, but I couldn't find your email addy anywhere. So I will just have to publicly compliment you on your fine photography. That's some really beautiful work of yours on the Usefilm website! I particularly like Foggy Sunrise, the sunset self-potrait, and the blurry mountain bike. If you get the time, email me and tell me what's the deal with the website. Who gets to post images? There is definitely some nice photography there. I have really been enjoying using my medium format view camera for landscapes. The camera itself is fairly light at a little over 2 pounds, but weight adds up quick with film backs, meters, filters, tripod, etc. Still, once you see 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" slides, it is hard to go back to 35mm. And view camera movements are pretty cool, too. I do want a digital camera, though. For family snaps to emial out, if nothing else. You can never have too many cameras!” 1:05:55 PM 10/23/01 RE: Digital Photos “i took back my olympus d-150 today.. i now have the d-510z (same numbers, just different order and way cooler) a review ” 12:36:21 AM 10/24/01
