Waffle stompers
I use Raichle Eigers, prefering the heavy leather and support for support. I feel like I can tackle any terrain as if they were tanks. I could never wear a light pair of split leather/fabric boots. What do you like...heavy or light boots?

RE: Waffle stompers
Spock I find your post to be very offensive, judgemental and ill-informed... Oh wait we are talking bping here,SORRY!

I have a pair of mid/hvy weight danners that are great. Seven years old and going strong. However, I only hike in trail running shoes. I have a pair of New Balance 804's that are excellent.

I have some mid-weight boots by Merrell, I forget the model name. I like them. They are very comfy. Heavy boots are stable but they are still H E A V Y.

RE: Waffle stompers
But heavy boots separate the men from the boys. Men who wear heavy boots eat steak and potatos, the light-on-their-feet eat salad and tofu.

The answer to your question,Spock, is yes.

I have three different pairs of boots. Depends on the trip.

RE: Waffle stompers
So what you're saying, arclite, it that depends on how hungry you are?

What would you recommend to someone who can't afford several pairs of boots? Invest in good heavy boots that will last, or less expensive light boots?

RE: Waffle stompers
I like the feel of heavy boots. I currently have a pair on Montrail Morraines but they are massive overkill for Florida. Normally I hike in a pair of Vasque Clarion GTXs A light to mid weight boot.
Can't stand running shoes.

RE: Waffle stompers
In that case, Spock, I'd have to go with the heavier boots. They may be overkill for light trips, but light shoes won't hold up to the really cool rugged places that are worth seeing.

If I'm on an extended trip climbing mountains, using crampons, or traveling cross country through rocky ground, I use my Solomon Super Mountain 9. For lighter loads, or on groomed trails, I like my Vasque Sundowners (that's as light as I'm willing to go. I like ankle support.). If I'm doing a beach trip, I have an old pair Herman Survivor beaters that I've had since High School. I'd use light shoes for the beach trips, but I usually have to carry all my water for those. And water's mighty heavy.

RE: Waffle stompers
I don't think that I would roll an ankle without support but I know I need a good thick sole for the rocky trails I usually hike.

I've tried a pair of trail running shoes and ended up with bruised feet.

Scarpa SLs for me.

RE: Waffle stompers
I, also wear a pair of Vasque mid-duty boots. I hike with a friend who wears the heavy duty boots and I can't see the advantage. My soles are tough enough to take the rocks and my necessary ankle support is there, but I don't have to pick up the extra weight every time I take a step. I like to have some feel for the terrain, and when I had my first pair of heavy duty boots, I felt just like a tank rolling over the terrain.

LOVE my waffle stompers, Solomon X Mountain. But I think a lot depends upon the terrain you normally hike. I like the ankle support, it's saved me a number of times.

I am old enough to remember when waffle stompers were a definite fashion faux pas. They have been "in" for so long now, they are like SUV's. You might not need them, but you want to look like you do.

Dunham Canadian Duraflex. Midweight leather treated to absorb silicone, with good ankle support, I'm on the second set of vibram replacement soles,so I guess they're not too bad.

RE: Waffle stompers
If I know I'll be on a well maintained trail I wear my average run of the mill kmart special sneakers. I get a few toe stubs and bruises on the ankles but is worth it because of the comfort.

Rocky trail and cross-country is another story. In that case I wear my average run of the mill kmart special heavy boots

RE: Falaffal chompers
I'm an all leather boot from wayback...work, play, whatever...steel toes' at concerts are a must. Got Asolo 520 GTX full-grain everythings and I dig them...for off trail dayhikes with tha boy.

Been backpacking in running shoes every hike so far this year and must admit, this is another "don't knock it till you try it", that I knocked, till I tried it. Much more comfortable, less heavier, and not as hard on my ankles, what with no ankle support, as i thought it would be with the extra pounds on the back.

I'm pretty much convinced...if it's an established trail, running shoes will do the trick.

And on another note...it's liberating to simply walk through streams and get your feet wet and keep hiking, unlike what you would to keep your boots dry.

Just noticed this thread.
I'll be out of town next weekend, dang.

Mobile has a halfa$$ed gear store but it's almost unfindable unless you are a local.
You have to exit off I-65 at the Springhill exit, go north on the frontage road to I forget the name of the road, then West. I'll have to goggle it and post later.
Prices are ABOVE list price on everthing.
I looked at a trail guide there and noticed the price sticker wasn't quite covering the printed list price. It was $2 over the list price.

Well poo.......ok..no gear shopping...I'll stop in Birmingham to satisfy my thirst.....Galyans look out!!!!...oh and a stop by the Cheesecake Factory for Godiva cheesecake..O M G .......

you are coming to Sipsey in Nov???

Spoke N Trail Inc

I told you incorrectly, go South after the Springhill exit to Old Shell Road. Go down Old Shell, a narrow two lane, thur a housing area untill you see a nice coffee house on the right. Spoke n trail is on the left.
Airport is the street with the big malls and many places to eat. Downtown has some nice nightclubs but you will be mugged or worse if you stray away from the main drag.
There are some good seafood places across the river near the Battleship.

Thanks for the info.....I'll stop in Galyans......what do ya want for your birthday ( since ya already got yourself a Prolite4 you ruined my gift!!!)
