I'll always love Italy.

Any country that invented pizza can't be all bad.

Being part Whaap and knowing some relatives right from the old country, I can say that the pizza they make here in the states is not the pizzamy relatives make. Normally it's made in a one inch deep rectangular pan. the dough usually ends up rising at least a couple of inches. Sauce is lightly and randomly spread over the top. Fresh slices of tomatoe, lightly cheezed and other stuff freshly sliced. umh umh good. I guess I kinda got carried away. Sorry

What I do know is that a royal family moved to a part of Italy that made pizzas. The Queen Margharita asked to taste the pizzas, and she received three varieties.

She liked the pizza we know today, sauce, basil, and mozzerella. The pizza was then named after her, Margharita.

Biz, I grow my own basil, and it's my main spice in making sauce. From what I hear grappa is strong stuff. It may be similar to drinking Uzo, which is a Greek liquor.

Joy : Myth.

Pizza predates the Roman Empire. Pizza remains were found in Pompeii. Ancient recipes were found written in Etruscan. The American contribution is sprouts and pineapple.

I have had many different varieties of pizza while in Italy. Yeah, some is crap. The good stuff is made around Naples. Depends how much effort the preparer wants to put into it.

We ate at a restaurant in Italy once. And the girl we were with wanted her pepperoni pizza w/ a side of "chips" (aka french fries). The guy didn't understand english so much. He brought her a pizza covered in french fries and ketchup with one single pepperoni on top. Then, when we gave him a credit card to pay, he jumped on his moped and drove away... Needless to say, we were very concerned. He returned 20 minutes later w/ a receipt from another restaurant. It turned out that he didn't have credit card capabilities but his brother's restaurant did. So he took it there to charge it!

Crazy place!

my friend Lauren went to Italy last summer, and she told me she saw a guy going around a traffic circle in this teeny-tiny 3-wheel car. his car tipped over, and he fell out...then he got up, righted his car, and jumped back in and took off!! LOL...i just can't picture a CAR that's small enough to do that!

Gear Slut, those Chinese did invent a lot of stuff...they've been around a long time. Stuff invented for backpacking; matches (invent by Chinese women under siege), compass, paper (TP), printing (maps) etc. Other weird stuff include; ice cream, sunglasses, gunpowder etc. As in any nation, it was corruption that did them in (plus the commies didn't help).

Yep, but it's fun to see someone Chinese and someone Italian argueing about who invented stuff first. LOL

Credit the Chinese with the world's first forest practices laws -- circa 2500 BC. Laws from then regulated timber harvesting on steep hillsides.
