3) Stay away from bars, strip clubs, etc. You'd be suprised how fast you can money there.

However, something available to almost everyone is the power of compound interest. If you save 10% of what you make for the first 15 years after you graduate from college and invest it at average long term rates of return for a normal investor (say 6-10%), you will be independently wealthy early enough to enjoy it.

(If I had all the investments I made before I was 32 and hadn't sold them off over time, I would be independent today...)

3. Can't live with parents - they live in a anti-growth economy, hard to find job as civil engineer.

4. I'm very nice to my parents, however they will need us kids to bail them out financially in about 10-20 years.

5. Must have vehicle to live in less expensive part of town away from work. Also need vehicle for work (meetings, job site visits, etc. - compensated for this),
not to mention hiking trips

6. Hiking and camping is not cheap. I own well over 5 g's of gear between hiking, climbing, skiing, photography, and outdoor clothing.

I am however maxing out my 401k, investing other places in the market, marrying into a wealthier famiy, and looking to get involved with the lucrative real estate market in Las Vegs.

My problem is I'm learning too late. By the time I left college I had close to 10g in credit card debt and $20g in college loans. I'm now starting to pull my head above water, but now I must save money for a wedding and honeymoon.

No silverspoon here, I will make money the old fasion way; hard work and interest over time. Goal is to retire before age 50.”

“Thanks Le Subtil. I learned this past year (after having newergirl) that all that other crap matters little. Money doesn't buy much, like dignity, love, or happiness. The more simplistic my life is the happier I am. Of course, I could use a little dough for gear! Hahaha! Also, Buddur makes an important point. Grow your own! I sew, I cook most of my meals (instead of going out), and I read alot (instead of rent movies). Depend less on others to provide for you, whether that be clothing, food, or entertainment.

This is not to say I am some kind of nun type. Have a good time and decide what you might like ahead of time. Save money for it and go all out. For instance, I wanted a computer. I saved for 6 months, I got a computer. I wanted to go to Holland and screw around, I saved for 9 months, worked some while I was there, and presto, a trip to Europe!”
