Zipper trouble!!

“Anybody got any suggestions on what to put on the zipper of a sleeping bag to keep it from hanging up. Just bought a new bag and the zipper hangs worse than any I?ve ever had. I thought about maybe wax or something like that to make it smoother. But before I try that I thought I would ask someone else first. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.”

“Seriously.. I know that was one of the selling points on my moonstone bag.. in that it had this "seam tape" along the zipper's inside facing.. so it make it really had to hang up..

So far.. been working really good..

I?ve used it a couple of times now and I like the bag, I just thought there might be a simple fix for the zipper that I could try before I went through the hassle of sending it
back. They might not take it back anyway because I ripped one of the straps on the compression bag off going through ?FatMan?s Squeeze? last weekend at Sipsey.”

“I've looked at it and found that when the zipper hangs it kinks up and that is when it grabs the fabric. Maybe if I could get ahold of some of that tape that might help. Where can you buy it?”

“I don't know if you can buy that stiffening tape seperately but if your getting material hung up in there, that's your problem. I doubt if all the lubricant in the world on the zipper would make any difference.”

“The zipper snags on the inside of the bag?

Just a thought.......those iron patches, cut those into inch or wider strips, (1st iron test your bag if possible), then iron those patch strips on to the areas next to the zipper that snag the most. This should help if the iron doesn't hurt the bag.

Another thing if you keep the bag taunt while zippering up this lessens the amount of cloth that can get hung up in the zipper.

Learn to use you finger and thumb alittle better while zipping. Using a thumb or finger to plow away the fabric as you zip up.”

“I would try a silicone or PTFE (Teflon) type lubricant.”

“There's probably nothing worse than getting trapped in the bag with a full bladder.

“Some white Lithium greese or white lightning will slick that up for you. I mean it does wonders for the hubs on my bike.”

“You can buy fusible interfacing tape-double or single sided and iron it along the zipper. If you use the double sided you will have to use some kind of basting with it.

If their customer service is worth anything they will take it back. If not you might try dealing directly with the manufacturer.”

“take it to a tailor and have them sew in a tape like what it should have had to begin with”

“If it is snaging on the fabric all the lubrication in the world would not solve the problem. My Moonstone snags and to solve it I grip the zipper between my thumb and finger. The fabric can not get into the zipper to cause the problem.”

“This is the kind of defect that doesn't come to light until after the product has been used. I don't think they can legally resell a returned item as new anyway regardless of the cosmetic condition. I would take it back.”

“Go to your hardware store or locksmith and get a little graphite dry lubricant. A little goes a long way and the zipper will slide smoothly with less snags on the fabric.”

My moonstone bag zipper doesn't snag on fabric, but if the zipper comes apart at the bottom, at the mateable starting spot, it is difficult to zip it together again. The guys on the last trip had to fix it for me, after I opened it up to dry, at the lunch break. It got stuck and my fingers were not strong enough to undo it.

Sew on satin hem tape next to the zipper to prevent snagging. It is lightweight like the taffetta, but if you do it smooth enough, it should allow the zipper to glide without grabbing.”

“Looking back at all the times my sleeping bag zipper got snagged even though it supposedly is unsnagable...I feel for ya, Mr.Rabbitman. I got a short fuse for those occurrances. I usually have to do what Mr.Sticks suggests...hold the zipper just right to keep material from snagging.”

“I wouldn't put lubricant on anything near fabric; besides, it sounds as if the problem is the zip itself and how it was sewn onto the bag. Even if you've used it a few times, a reputable dealer or manufacturer will replace it if they see that it is a construction error. The only other solution would be to send it to a repair shop for a new zip.

BTW, this is why I use a top-loading pack only - if something goes wrong, it will probably be the zip. I am of an age that I hate zips and can remember when the Woods 90x90 down bag (the one Hemingway mentions in 'For Whom the Bell Tolls') came with a choice of a zip or brass snaps. I even knew someone (old back then) in Winnipeg that had a 90x90 with buttons. Good luck.”
