Other hobbies.. hMMmm.. I have an interest in information security (or the lack of it; i.e., subject to hackers)

Any free time I have outside of work goes to keeping wife happy.. *lol*.. which trust.. is a challenge sometimes.

RE: Other Hobbies
pepperDog, I figured you for an agility person! Agility is huge fun, no doubt about it.

I am still training both Jazz and Sprock to compete in obedience, and the funny thing is I don't really like the obedience scene. too many people treating their dogs poorly for my tastes. Still, I want to get CD's on both dogs, more to prove it can be done without inflicting pain and confusion on a dog than anything else. Tracking is kind of neat. My boy Sprocket loves to track!

I went to an AKC show yesterday and couldn't believe all the clean dogs!! Not something you see at an agility trial! They also had earthdogs, which I had never seen - they weren't clean! I watched a little obedience but why do that when you can do agility???

Delta, my first agility dog, is an aussie border collie (?) mix so AKC wasn't an option. My new dog, Ticha, is an ILPable Australian Cattle Dog so I have to figure out if I want to run her in AKC. She won't be ready to trial until spring.

Is motorcycling a hobby, well put me down for motorcycling, and kayaking. I like cooking new recipes. I put a lot of sweat into my cooking, anyone for chicken soup, lol? My next hobby will be gardening, as the house I am buying is landscaped with many trees, ever here of a Quincy? There are 24 plants in my mini garden in front of the house. I hope I like gardening! I will be growing a vegetable garden in the spring, and will love doing that.

FOUR teenagers, Le Subtil? I know what your hobbies are. Keeping track of what the kids are doing, who they are doing it with, where they are, when they will be home, etc. Right? With mine, I also have to deal with her court dates, her lawyers negotiations with the prosecutor, and what insurance company will cover her for auto insurance. I have a 19 yo daugher who is having a rough transition to adulthood, with some farily minor traffic mistakes, compounded by having a closed bottle of beer in her car, and a pot pipe in her purse. Oh boy! I'd rather be hiking somewhere.

Wind Walker, very good, you're probably right that it's called quince. I didn't really find any internet info on it, except like you say, that it's a crab apple. I also have a regular crab apple next to it. Now if only I liked jams which people use the apples for.

The branches are supposed to be covered in blooms. Mine are a coral color. On my side yard is a weeping cherry tree. There's going to be a lot of pink around my house come spring.

Rocks.

I rebuild/restore walls around my 230 year old farmhouse. Fieldstone patios. Right now working on a fieldstone pathway through what will be perennial beds. The path lead to a rebuilt well with a cobblestone patio and a stone bench. Right now I have the paths largely dug out (down to 6 inches) and refilled with gravel (about 3 inches deep), next some and inch or two of sand and then the stones.

All drystone work, no mortar. No mechanical assists (except one or two lifts of especially big pieces from my neighbors front loader)

Thanks bacpac, sure is good to fit in somewhere... Although, from the little lurking I've done over here I think you'd be a risky guy to form an alliance with on this board. It does seem like a lot of outdoorsy people share those hobbies, eh? Pamster, pulling tubes is a different way of talking about using a good old fashioned bong. Refers to the tube that you clear when you pull the slide to get down to business. Also a rather covert way of talking about it --- as most people that don't do that sort of awful thing don't have a clue what you're talking about. Definitely not looking to start some righteous dope thread, sorry about the reference.

RE: Other Hobbies
lipstick hiker- I've heard the prefinished kits are pretty easy. One thing I would advise if installing unfinished hardwood is MOVE OUT while doing it. We did the living room, dining room and kitchen in our house last year. Oh my gosh the dust! We even taped plastic over the doorways and still had dust EVERYWHERE! Not to mention trying to live with floors you can't step on for a few days. Good time for a backpacking trip;-)

towndawg- I'll be glad to share my recipes with you. Drop me an email. I can suggest an Indian cookbook, "Classic Indian Cooking." I can't remember the authors name but I'll try to remember to look when I get home. As far as the Dim Sum goes it's almost all things I've collected from friends. I also have an aquantance who's family owned a Tea House and she gave me the "family " recipes. I'm one lucky gal:-) Just remember this,
Indian=time consuming but easy
Dim Sum=time consuming and labor intensive.
My kids wonder why I go through the trouble when there is a great Tea House a few miles from us.

RE: Other Hobbies
the word "hobby" comes from the word "hobbyhorse" by the way.

speaking of Indian food, i got to help one of my friends (who is Indian--well, more recently, Guyanese) make some on Sunday...we had a dinner party. we made chicken curry and that flat bread and some kind of butternut squash dish that had SHRIMP in it--just for flavor. at first, i suspected she was making it up off the top of her head, but it was sooooo good! :-)

RE: Other Hobbies
Thanks Pamster for the advice. I see from the internet that some flooring comes with the planks already coated. Maybe that will be the way to go if we are in already, and will cut down on dust, though I'm sure it will be lots more expensive.
lipstick hiker
3:51:11 PM

RE: Other Hobbies
Not really lots more expensive lips. The only real disadvantage to the prefinished boards is that any minor variations in height aren't leveled out with the sander. If you have a pretty level subfloor and buy a decent quality prefinished floor, it's not really noticeable. Definitely much less dust.

Idaho Bob - I have 5 kids(2 of my own and 3 step children) - two 21 yr olds, two 18 yr olds, and a 15 yr old caboose. Take heart. Most kids make some poor choices during the adult transition. Mine have run the gammut from alcohol to drugs to criminal charges to car wrecks. The 2 oldest are starting to come out on the other side and yours will too. I operate what I call "bridge maintenance" making sure that they know that I'm there for them when they need me.
Good luck.

I used a jigsaw. The hardest part was replacing the baseboards. I just got done putting the new ones on (the old ones got wrecked in process of removing them).

It took us, 2 people, a day to lay a 250 sq ft room. Baseboards, another day (need a miter saw to make the cuts).

I laid pergo in two rooms while I was off on pregnancy leave. The hardest part was getting up!

My Aunt and Uncle just got a prefinished (cherry) floor laid. It's junk compared to old fashioned wood that you finish. We have wood and the laminate, I really like the laminate more. It depends on what room you're puting it in though. I wouldn't want a floating floor in a lav or kitchen.
