Practice what you preach
When Joaquin Phoenix walks the line in a Johnny Cash biopic, it will be in plastic cowboy boots.

The moody actor is a staunch animal-rights supporter, and drove the wardrobe folks a little batty by insisting on wearing an entirely “cruelty-free” wardrobe, says a source.

“He refused to wear anything made of leather,” says a source. “So even Johnny Cash’s signature cowboy boots had to be approved by PETA.”

one must wonder why he chained those lions before subjecting them to violent acts by the gladiators. is it ok to torture animals if you are not going to eat them but not for clothing? of course that is absurd. i hear through the grapevine that joaquin is more of a peta wannabe. i have never seen him at any of the conferences. i applaud his attempt, but one must think he can try harder

Fullmoonglo - I appreciate your standing up for your principles. I don't believe Chief Seattle ever said that what you quote him as saying. There are lots myths about what Chief Seattle said.

I tried to hunt up the quote and found no real source for the quote. There is a famous speech attributed to him that he never really gave. There is, however, a first hand report of a speech he did give - it's probably filtered, but its the most credible record by far that exists:
see:

http://www.nativebiz.com/Web_Links,l_op=visit,lid=849.html

For some info on the spurious texts see:

http://www.synaptic.bc.ca/ejournal/seattle2.htm

or

http://www.snopes.com/quotes/seattle.htm#add
(I think Snopes is accurate on the facts, but their characterization of the most authentic version of this speech is far too simplistic and dismissive)

LOL at Ghoul.

There is a rumour that he was the unintenional author of the vaudville line "...take my wife, please" when he was entertaining an emmissy from territorial govenor. In reality, Mrs. Seattle had offered the emissary some pickled bear gizzard that she had prepared specially for the guest. When the emissary declined to take some, the chief - concerned for her feelings - said, "Please my wife, take." It was due to translator error that a new line was added to the repetoire of corny humour.

(OK, maybe there wasn't any such rumour - but maybe we can start one)

i know i am not in government, but there should be a law against people who do not take the lids entirely off of cans that are opened with a can opener. so many little animals crawl in and think they can get food but they get trapped inside and die

it would be easiest if the garbage collectors went through people's trash and reported violators to the police

maybe animals should have an uprising against this type of thing. If they only had a thumb bricks and eggs could be passed out.

moonglo if your so worried about the environment then why would you throw metal/aluminum cans in the garbage. Shouldn't you recycle them? If you do that then you can keep the cans in a safe location so no little creatures could crawl inside them

ewker, i am concerned about the environment. i do not use metal cans, so i do not throw them away. i was addressing people who do this sort of thing. you raise a good point about recycling

why would they need thumbs?

i bet they could sortof 'palm' the bricks

the poor hoofed buggers might have trouble tho
SaccoSeveredHeads

10/18/05

thumbs are important when gripping. However, they can get away with the palming...aim may be compromised but doable.

now we've got an equality issue...whats a poor reptile to do? Monkeys have it made. Raccoons they oughta fair well. snakes are screwed.
CreatureofhabETTE

10/18/05

hmmm. good point. i hadn't thought about the snakes.

i remember in that conan movie james earl jones made a snake all stiff like and used it as an arrow.

maybe the snakes could all be arrows for the monkeys and raccoons to shoot?

being an arrow may not be a glamorous job, but every little bit helps

btw just curious as to how you know people don't cut off the lids. Did you cut you finger on a lid while trying to steal a persons identity.

You don't use metal cans, so everything you buy is in plastic or glass containers

Maybe prior to the animal march on trash sites everywhere they should be made to take this test. HEY great idea with the snakes...and we could used medical science to keep them stiff with Vitamin V! GREAT IDEA

How Important Is Your Thumb?

Directions:
1. Have a helper lightly tape your thumbs to the sides of your hands. Do not tape them tightly because it could interfere with your circulation. You should still be able to move your four fingers.

2. Try each one of the activities below. Make sure not to use your thumbs at all as you do the activities.

3. Decide if the activity took longer or was more difficult to do without your thumbs, was about the same to do without your thumbs, or if you couldn’t do it at all without your thumbs. Record the activity under your choice on the chart below.

Activities to Try Without Your Thumb

1. Write your name with a pencil
2. Put on a sock and shoe
3. Open a door using a knob
4. Brush or comb your hair
5. Button a button
6. Tie a shoelace
7. Blow up a balloon and tie it
8. Seal a plastic bag
9. Pull up a zipper
10. Pick a coin up off a flat surface
11. Brush your teeth
12. Open a jar

Here's another list of things that are difficult to do without a thumb:

1. Thumb a ride
2. Suck your thumb
3. Sit around with your thumb up your ass
4. Put your thumb on a scale
5. Be "all thumbs"
6. Condemn a gladiator to death in the arena (Thumbs down)
7. Give someone a "thumbs up"
8. Thumb your nose at someone
9. Bite your thumb at someone (more popular in Arab cultures)
10. Pull a plum out of your Christmas pie

its a very important appendage. Taken far too often for granted. Now that the animals have united..maybe thumbs should consider an uprising against the middle finger?

lets not forget the plastic thingy that goes on six packs.

am I the only one that has to go out at 9:00 pm in the rain chasing a geese so I can cut it off of him?

Cans and jars of food materials can be rinsed out to get all those organics into the waste water system and so keep the organics out of landfills.

If cans are crushed, the occupy less space and a small animal could not get in and if the organics are not there the small animal would not be tempted to get in a can.

As well, metal cans and glass jars are made with very abundant minerals, so are preferable to plastics. Metal cans will rust a way to base elements. Of course, much energy is required to manufacture metal, glass or plastic containers. Glass containers can be reused, though.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A chicken toy that squawks and flaps its wings when strangled is "grossly irresponsible" and sends the wrong message to young children, a spokesman for a leading animal welfare group said Tuesday.

The toy is manufactured by a Taiwanese company and is widely available in toy and electronics stores across Australia. It is marketed for children over 3.

A product description on the Web site of Jaycar Electronics, a major Australian importer of toy, says: "Grab him by the neck and he will squawk and cluck like mad, flapping his wings and feet wildly as if he is really being choked."

But Michael Beatty, a spokesman for the Queensland state branch of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the toy was "grossly irresponsible" and sent the wrong message to young children.

"What's next? Burn a cat? Shoot a dog?" Beatty said. "Children of that age are likely to turn around and try the same thing on their pet bird or even the cat or dog. Then they're going to wonder why the animal fights back."
