Political Rallies End in Brawl

Two political rallies turned into a brawl Saturday night in Des Moines.

A Democratic rally at Drake's Olmstead Center, urged young Iowans to get out and vote. It was targeted toward high school and college students. A group known for not voting. The rally featured comedian Janene Garafalo and classic rock star Joan Jett, but it got a surprise visit from some unwanted guests.

A group of college republicans at their Midwest caucus leadership conference heard about the rally and stormed in.

"There are seven of us who worked really hard at putting this conference together, said Jason Cole of the college republicans. "so, we met, discussed and majority ruled. We went down there."

What they didn't discuss is what to do if things get out of hand. One of the Bush supporters shoved Jett and she pushed back in anger. Ole said that was the decision of one person, and not at all representative of what the conference was trying to do.

Campus security did show up break things up. The concert did resume as planned. In fact, Jett wrapped up her day with two more performances. One in Fort Dodge, the other in Marshalltown.”

“I recently returned from an election seminar, and thought I'd share some valuable tips for folks out there, in order to keep Republicans from screwing you out of your vote in 2004.

Since HAVA passed in 2002, some things have changed, here are a few changes that we anticipate republicans will try to take advantage of to disenfranchise voters in the upcoming elections:

1. Photo ID's - According to new plan, only 1st time voters who register by mail without providing copies of thier ID's are required to provide ID when they cast thier ballots. However, it is reccomended that everyone bring thier ID with them, in case they try to restrain you from voting for nat having it.

2. Provisional Voting - The scam of scams! The law says of the voter's eligiblity is challanged at the polls (something Chief Justice Renquist did to black voters in the 70's in Arizona), the voter can request a provisional ballot which is reviewed later. The majority of these ballots never are counted, and the majority are cast by voters in poorer communities. A poll worker could technically challange a voter if they don't have a photo ID, and make the voter use a provisional ballot, which likely won't be counted, so, at all costs, fill out a regular ballot! I know in Ohio, a coalition of organizations is setting up a network of lawyers who will file suit immediately against any polling station that refuses to administer a ballot. We learned our lesson from Florida..... if you file suit before the voting ends, the vote will count.... afterwards, you're screwed.

3. New voting machines: Any new machines, according to the new law, are to be availible for people to train on prior to elections. This is good for elderly folks who can't see very well, or have a hard time adjusting to technology. Try to get the new machine brought in to your grandma's nursing home, so she and other seniors can learn how to properly use the equipment.



Please note that most of the folks who get thier votes discarded, or who are turned away at the polls are poor people, people of color, and the elderly, the majority of whom vote for democrats.

LAFAYETTE — Vandals set fire to signs and wrote pro-President Bush messages on the front of Lafayette’s Democratic Party Headquarters, the second time the office was hit by vandals.

The remnants of a small fire fueled with John Kerry/John Edwards campaign signs remained on the front steps of the headquarters at 310 Buchanan St. in downtown Lafayette on Thursday morning.

A mixture of ash from the fire and what appeared to be motor oil was used to smear “4+ GWB” across the front windows and “W” on the headquarters’ door.

Homeowner Rob Schaeffer: 'My Signs Are Going Right Back In The Yard'

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison homeowners are livid after vandals defaced their homes.

Someone burned an 8-foot-by-8-foot Nazi swastika on a home's lawn near where Kerry-Edwards signs were posted. The vandals used grass killer to spray the symbol.

Several nearby homes were vandalized -- all were within a two-block radius on the West Side, near Ice Age Trail, News 3 reported.

State Democratic Party officials claim it's the latest in a series of desperate acts by Republicans.

Homeowners are angry, but resolute in what they plan to do next.

"I just cannot believe that someone would take the liberty to do this," said homeowner Rob Schaeffer. "We're appalled that someone would choose to destroy our property because they don't believe in our political views.
My signs are going right back in the yard. This is my property. We live here. We have rights."

Police are investigating the criminal damage and told the homeowner it will be investigated as a hate crime, which carries stiffer penalties.”
