Backpacking Trivia--WAIT! you have to check this
Is it possible to create a thread that is so broad everyone would post on it? Does the lime green jello thread come close? (actually, I have never posted anything on that thread-yet)

Here's a piece of bping trivia: if you're really thirsty and you want to conserve water, suck on Jolly Rancher candies while you hike. You will drink less

Drink lots of water before you start hiking. It is easier to carry in your belly than on your back.

Of course you end up pissing a lot of it before your body has a chance to use it.

If your body is excreting moisture through sweat glands and lungs the need to urinate greatly reduced.

For mental relief, leave your liberal buddies at home when hiking, the constant incoherant bitching about nothing can really get on the nerves.

I use a pee bottle that is shaped totally different that my drinking bottles.
It's usually a 1 liter Mtn Dew bottle. That's nothing like a Plattypus or Nalgene.

When arriving at camp the first thing you should do is take a monster crap adjacent to the cooking area. This will keep the flies from bothering you when preparing din-din. Additionally, if you let people see you do this it will keep other campers at a distance so you can enjoy your time in camp with out bothersome neighbors.

RE: Backpacking Trivia
OK, on that note....

I hate to admit this but..

On our last 10 day trip, while I was rigging a sling around a tree to hang my pack (mice) one of the kids took a stick and wedged it between two trees and hung 4 packs on it....

Man, given another 30 years in the mountains and I would have thought of it....

If you take wipes with you to "freshen up" they will freeze into a solid block of cloth when the temp is 22 degrees out.

Then, they aren't worth a dang..lol

Tx, dry them out before you go. They weigh less in your pack and you can moisten them with warm water for use.

Dreamed I was an Eskimo
Frozen wind began to blow
Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below
It was a hundred degrees below zero...

And my mama cried
And my mama cried
Nanook, a-no-no
Nanook, a-no-no
Don't be a naughty Eskimo
Save your money, don't go to the show

Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Oh, oh" Oh
Well I turned around and I said "Ho, Ho"
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"
"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"

Wouldn't the sugar actually dehydrate you more? If you're low on water and you're thirsty, the last thing you should do is add sugar to your diet!

RE: Backpacking Trivia
mtnsteve, did the stick between 2 trees really work to keep the critters out of your pack? I was on a trip once where the mice were bad and someone in the party tried that and the mice just climbed the tree and walked out on the stick and into the packs!

Now I always carry my food in ziplocks, which are then put in a small trashbag with a drawstring closure. I hang this bag from a length of parachute cord strung between two trees. This setup won't work in bear country, but it has never failed in mouse country. :)

Mice can travel across/up 4lb fishing monofilament. I figure they can go most anywhere imaginable (if they REALLY wanted to).
There is the pie pan barrier thingy, I suppose...

Pee before you retire - sheesh!

If your thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

Alcohol dehydrates like crazy -
but who cares?
