Trioxane
I stopped in the Army/Navy store and bought a pkg of trioxane because it was cheap, but now I'm wondering... Is this stuff "unhealthy?" Does it leave a residue on the pots? Does it stink? If its relatively inert, I'll give it a go.
What say ye?

RE: Trioxane
Good question. I was thinking about getting some to keep in my emergency kit. We started the campfire with it this past weekend. Works great.

RE: Trioxane
Its good for an emergency fire starter. You can use one bar to start quit a few fires, even with wet wood. It does however have pretty noxious smoke. It'll make you choke and gag something fierce if you get a big puff of it. Try esbit instead.

RE: Trioxane
You will gag and choke if you get a small whiff of burning trioxane.

It is good for heating up a can of beans. Trioxane is what we used to heat C-rations.

RE: Trioxane
Another vote for esbit. I've used trioxane. Very smelly and the smoke....GGEEEEZZZ. Another thing, if you try to blow them out to save it for later, it might splash back on you like candle wax. Happened to me last time and it got me just under the eye. Nice little burn mark it left.

RE: Trioxane
I carry a small bottle of alcohol for emergency fire starting. It also works well on wet wood and it works well in a cat can stove. No mess either.

RE: Trioxane
I would think that inhaling smoke from any fuel, liquid or solid, can't be good for you.

Triox works great and it's cheap. The only bad thing that I find about using it is the oily residue left on the bottom of the post and in the Esbit. Alcohol stoves are my prefered summer cooking gear.

RE: Trioxane
I could be wrong but isn't esbit non-toxic?

Trioxin definitely is not

RE: Trioxane
Esbit is non toxic if you plan on eating it. You want to smoke it, be my guest.

RE: Trioxane
I read a study published by the Army on Trioxane inhalation. Basically it said avoid breathing trioxane fumes at all costs.
