It's not an "arty" or cool shot, but it does show a big dam and a guy fishing... which kinda shows what the USFWS does with its refuges. Kinda like a textbook shot, ya know what I mean?

I guess they get maybe 40 entries and then take them around on exhibit a few places. Geez, and I just used off-color mats I had around, just to get them done. Dang it!!! I may have to reprint one and re-mat and tell them to ditch the first one. ugggh!”

“howdy hey and thanks for the b-day wishes! It was a pretty great weekend. Headed to Prairie du Chien. I made it in and outta Cabela's without spending any moola, woo hoo! Did watch the fish feeding at the big aquarium, which amounted to PETA fear-inducing gobs of little fish being dumped in. Fun to watch whatever it was chomp down a 6-inch something or other. And foolish ME, I thought it was gonna be dry fish food!!

Dryfoot and I did a little exploring at Pike's Peak State Park. I took him offtrail, down the wicked stuff. I ***think*** he was impressed with the Mississippi River view that goes around three-quarters of the park area, complete with nice overlooks and open forest. We camped there -- and I was cold for the first time camping this fall! Had to put more layers on.

Sunday we checked out another park before heading north along the river. Took one of my favorite backroads north of Harpers Ferry and were treated not only to a huge hawk, golden eagle or young bald eagle on a branch above us, just looked down on us... but also to tons and tons and tons of migrating tundra swans. I think that is Pool No. 9 on the River. Nos. 8 and 9 have some very good spots.

Then we drove around as much as you can at Reno. Holy moly, as expected it was a Hmong hunting party paradise for the first weekend of whitetail gun season (one reason why we weren't hanging out in MN!!!) Tons of people... and we counted 14 deer hanging up in one place.

We did explore a rock cave... and then headed back.

Oh yeah and I got snowshoes from dryfoot! And an REI gift certicate from Elementary 1.

“"Holy moly" is right. Is it freaking November already? I didn't fill in the date at the computer sign-in sheet just now cuz I had no idea as to what it is today... though I did vote Tuesday. So I was aware that last Tuesday was the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November (official voting day), but your birthday slipped right past.

I have been aware of it's approach for weeks, nay, months, but alas. Actually, I've been scanning the magnolia trees for berry laden cones, but they haven't seemed to do so well this year. My intent was to get a couple to you.

LOL, yeah, I had forgotten all about my ill-fated attempt to bring home the magnolia seeds. I was just recalling bringing home cotton, as we had snow around here and some bushes had what appeared to be puffy white balls on them (OK< so they were a little big! LOL)

“I plan to send you a couple cones with seeds, not just some seeds. De-seeded cones from "seedsons" past are findable on the ground - though a little weather worn - but they aren't as pretty as fresh, berry laden ones. I lost the ones you had bagged for packing when I made my move from home, btw.
