Bill Bryson Rumor
Phil (from GA) who I hiked with a month ago told me that the guy in Bill Bryson's 'walk in the woods' was fictional..

Really? Have y'all heard that?

Yes, Katz (?) was a fake. Strangly that was best part of the book. As soon as he was gone the book sucked.

RE: Bill Bryson Rumor
Steve Katz is his travel partner in his book about Europe as well. A must read, especially the chapter on Paris.

RE: Bill Bryson Rumor
I believe he travelled with someone but "Steve Katz" is a pseudoname.

RE: Bill Bryson Rumor
If I recall correctly, I think Bryson hiked at least some small portion of the trail...... and, to quote David Letterman, perhaps "embellished" from there.......

Funny that the author of one of the best selling (?) "AT" books never completed the trail. He snookered me as well.

I knew he never finished the AT, but I have to admit the visual I got of his "friend" throwing all his gear off the side of that mountain was hysterical.

I think the only thing he saved in the way of food was the Twinkies, because they were so light weight! LOL

Its like his recent Australia book. He visited a few times. Hit the high spots, and wrote the bok.

He spent a summer doing a few section hikes, put together some humourous antecdotes . . . and viola'.

I loved the Beulah stuff in Waynesboro. Last time I was in town, I found the Kmart and laundry mat he wrote about. Kind of cool. And, man, did they have the greatest Chinese buffet there - great after hiking a bunch.
