“I was born with my trail name. It is short for "Phil Dirt". As an "absent minded professor" with all rights and priviledges, occasionally I forget my real name, and just remember my trail name instead. Works out great!”

Violin came from my complaining on one trip, one trip. My boots had given up the ghost and the sole was flapping off one. I got blisters. My pack had metal in the hipbelt and felt great in the store and for the first five miles but wore huge wounds into my hips after several days. They took months to heal. That pack has been renamed the 'claws-of-death'.

One of my buddies asked me to play a sad song on my violin and the name just stuck.

I really am pretty easy going on the trail (and in life generally) but the name won't go away.”
