Wine!..thread
It has been almost two years since I got sick with Lymes Disease. I wasn't able to drink alchohol without feeling lousy for a couple of days afterwards, but this seems to have finally passed.

My husband was up at Watkins Glen for a car race this summer, and visited the local vineyards with a friend. One of the wines he came home with was a Glenora Vineyards Port. It was really good, a lot like a merlot. This was the first wine from a U.S. vineyard outside of the west coast that I really enjoyed.

With the holidays coming up, I thought I would start a wine thread. What are your favorites?

Cabs, zins. Merlot's kinda bland. Don't like whites or sweet wines/ports.

I like the white wine from South America w/ the picture of the cat and the little cat charm that comes w/ the bottle. Gato Blanco . . . maybe.

When it comes to white wines, I am unsophisticated and easy to please. I like Pinot Grigio, or go get varietals from Cali like Chenin Blanc and White Zinfandel.
But for Red, I love the powerful intense old fashioned Italians, like an old Barolo by Mascarello. Normally, though I buy Spanish, Italian or Australian wine (like Wolf Blass yellow label) or a California Zinfandel.

I confess to taking a bottle of wine on short (one night), fairly flat backpacking trips.

Yummy sour grapes! Actually if I have more than one glass of any wine, red, white, or pink, it will give me a screaming headache. I had a glass of some really good Pinot Grigio from Oregon a while ago that was very good but I forgot the name.

RE: Wine!..thread
Reptiles, if you get a headache from wine, try one with no aded sulfites. Or try organically grown wines. They have sulfite levels of less than 100 parts per million by law. Non-organic can have up to something like 350 parts per million.

After starting to drink organic, NSA (no added sulfite)wines, I've found that more than a a glass of non-organic can give me a headache. NSA wines also tend to be a little higher on the alcohol content...not to mention the price.

A couple of my favorite wines...

Frey vineyards Syrah (Organic, NSA--California).

Summerhill Pinot Noir (Organic, low sulfite--Canada).

Kristin Hill Pinot Noir, Gewurtztraminer (Oregon)

Ravenswood Zinfindel (California)

General types of wine

Muscadet (it's a type, not a winery...very dry, fantastic w/ shellfish...don't let them sell you MUSCAT!)

Cotes du Rhone (French)

Chianti

so many to choose from!

You're talkin' to someone who resides in the heart of California's premier wine region... there are over 300 wineries alone here, and 40,000 acres of planted vinyard. No one could live long enough to try them all... dammit.

Hey PedXing, You have class. My folks pulled a Wolf Blass Yellow Label 1981 cab sav shiraz out from under the bed and it was sublime, angels wept.

If you like Aussie wines, try some from the Yarra Valley. Look for the De Bortoli Windy Peak Cab/Shiraz/ Merlot.

Pennsy: Wolf Blass is usually a pretty good buy.

Pennsy: LOL on Boones Farm. First time I ever got drunk it was Boones Farm. I was pretty young and my friend and I each had a bottle. He got sick at his stomach and I was obnoxious enough to gloat about my being able to handle it better than he was. He sucker punched in the stomach and soon my digestion was no better than his. (There Pennsy, that should stamp out any illusion that I have class).

LOL Ped!! That's class in my book! I'm getting woozey just thinking about this but we used to have a contest to see who could chug the most without spewing.

BB, I forgot about Delish Apple. Too many brain cells got lost in those contests, but I think I remember a grape flavor that was to die (literally!) for.

Wild Horse Vineyards. The Merlot and Pinot Noir are FABULOUS!!

There is an Italian Pinot Grigio that I love and I can't for the life of me remember the name right now, dang. Starts with a G and the bottle is blue witha dragon fly on it.
grumble, grumble, the first thing to go is the mind.

I too have been known to take a bottle of wine on a hike, not to mention taking a nalgene of Mr. Glen.

Ooops... it was Bunyip that made the remarks about Wolf Blass and class! (given my typos and confusion about who I was talking to, I'd say my brain cells were in an uproar just thinking about Boones Farm).
