RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
I've actually skipped periods while on long strenuous hikes. Has anyone else found this to be true?

Never heard of biodegradable tampons. The kind with applicators make for a little more trash to pack out, but I think they are more convenient. In addition, I always carry pads (the super skinny ones). That way, if I happen to be one a trail with a lot of other hikers and not a lot of trees and bushes to hide behind, I don't have to worry about imminent accidents.

I carry a bunch of small ziplock bags for daily trash, and a larger one where I stash the small bags together. There are sometimes trash receptacles at road crossings and trailheads. If you can't find a place to dispose of sanitary products, you'll need to pack them out with your other garbage. It's not acceptable to bury the trash (animals will just dig it up -- yech!) but you may be able to burn it if fires are allowed. Don't tell everyone what you're burning. :)

RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
ROFL! No kidding... but do they really ever? ;-)

Seriously though... the best thing I've found is to treat 'em like you would treat TP... bring along a bunch of snack-sized ziplock baggies inside a bigger one, and seal them in there to pack back out.

Even if you use 'bio-degradable' tampons, it still takes them a long time to disintegrate... that's assuming that the animals don't dig them up first...

RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
Tea, if you follow the LNT principles, they say to carry it out with you... how many times have you gone hiking in a relatively well used area and seen those disgusting TP flowers?

Unfortunately, TP doesn't decompose nearly as fast as we wish it would... they've done 'scat' studies(for lack of a better word) and found that even a year or two after burial, it looks(and smells) pretty similar to what it did when it was first buried... Peeeeew!

RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
well, I can tell you this ladies..when the temperature falls below freezing the adhesive on your pads stops working and if that isn't bad enough, you are in for one heck of a surprise in sub freezing temps if you don't pre-warm your tampons before you insert them..YIKES!!!

Do not, I repeat, do not, leave them in your pack at night outside, then grab one first thing in the morning to put in..HUGE MISTAKE!!

RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
Speaking of tampons...my friend was exspecting her 'friend" during our BP trip last week so had an abundance of tampons. Near the end of the trip she decided she had way too much stuff-food, tampons-ect...and was tring to pawm stuff off. So I took about 1/3 cup of olive oil and one the tampons along with a empty chicken can and made a oil torch light to read by that night. It took a few minites to soak the tampon and get it to light but that thing burned for about 45 minites. The things backpack freaks will do!

RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST
This thread just reminded me of an incident involving this type of product.

Wildlife biologists use bait stations to attract wildlife for population studies. The local Forest Service office used some super-absorbent pads to hold the bait, basically a rotten fish stew. The pads hold a lot of liquid a long time without drying out. Several are hung overhead just out of reach of any bears and in view of a camera with a motion detector.

It worked well, except a government auditor on a random examination of purchases wondered what the hell was some guy doing buying several cases of the things at a local store with a government credit card.

A diaphram would work the same as that Keeper and I think would be more comfortable. That Keeper looks like some Medieval instrument of torture.
