GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “HEY UM...YA KNOW BEING A WOMAN ON THE TRAIL SOMETIMES I HAVE A LITTLE PROBLEM...ARE THERE BIODEGRADABLE TAMPONS OUT THERE THAT CAN BE BURIED?” 4:55:33 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Hahahahahahaha, that'll teach 'em to not follow directions!” 4:56:45 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Yikes!! You need to discuss that one on emails.” 4:59:50 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “ick thats when i dint enjoy bping!” 5:02:18 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “I sure hope Iced Tea doesn't wander up in here. You guys might do him in.” 5:03:54 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “No - but I'd be willing to pack them out for you because I'm such a helluva nice man.” 5:08:43 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “so much for keepin the guys out eh?” 5:10:03 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “gojo's gearin' up for a high bid at the TT auction, looks like! ;-)” 5:10:33 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “It's like saying "don't think about a red elephant".” 5:13:10 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “just proof guys dont listen” 5:15:47 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “EW gross! boys they dont like to see the tampons” 5:25:14 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “I've actually skipped periods while on long strenuous hikes. Has anyone else found this to be true? Never heard of biodegradable tampons. The kind with applicators make for a little more trash to pack out, but I think they are more convenient. In addition, I always carry pads (the super skinny ones). That way, if I happen to be one a trail with a lot of other hikers and not a lot of trees and bushes to hide behind, I don't have to worry about imminent accidents. I carry a bunch of small ziplock bags for daily trash, and a larger one where I stash the small bags together. There are sometimes trash receptacles at road crossings and trailheads. If you can't find a place to dispose of sanitary products, you'll need to pack them out with your other garbage. It's not acceptable to bury the trash (animals will just dig it up -- yech!) but you may be able to burn it if fires are allowed. Don't tell everyone what you're burning. :)” 5:27:25 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “ROFL! No kidding... but do they really ever? ;-) Seriously though... the best thing I've found is to treat 'em like you would treat TP... bring along a bunch of snack-sized ziplock baggies inside a bigger one, and seal them in there to pack back out. Even if you use 'bio-degradable' tampons, it still takes them a long time to disintegrate... that's assuming that the animals don't dig them up first...” 5:27:32 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Its funny you say red elephant. I bet I just pissed someone off with that. I can heat it now "tea, your so imature" "Ice, that was low", but what the hell. Hystrung, see when you post something where guys arn't supose to read it, we do. Neverless, most of guys understand, its just nature.” 5:28:08 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Dang yankee fan” 5:32:03 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Biodegradable? Mmmmmmm...pretzel sticks???” 5:35:03 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “I would be willing to feed the Midols to you too - grape-like.” 5:37:18 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Eeeeew... Buddur! Pretzel sticks wouldn't work... they don't soak up enough moisture & all those little salt pieces would hurt! :-p” 5:37:22 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “ROTFLMAO!!!” 5:37:36 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “OK.........unsalted pretzel sticks!” 5:39:36 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Plus, using pretzels would make for a salty aftertaste...” 5:39:39 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “"I've actually skipped periods while on long strenuous hikes. Has anyone else found this to be true?" 30 days on the JMT and I carried those dang things for nothing!” 5:46:07 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “How 'bout us guys...anyone have any ideas how to keep the girls from having their "don't read this post"?” 5:48:35 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “THANX GUYS BUT I REALLY DONT DIG THOSE PRETZELS!” 5:48:58 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “ROFLMFAO @ you guys! You'd have to be into the whole 'angel wings' thing for that though, wouldn't you?” 5:49:50 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Mmmmm...you'll want to BURY them!!!” 5:50:10 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “It's surprising how many things, if not said immediately, seem not worth saying ten minutes from now. Think about it.” 5:50:26 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Mapster, your saying that you carry out TP too? I was allways tought to dig a ditch, and burry the TP in it” 6:02:01 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Pack it in, pack it out! (in baggies) Why bother burying when the marmots dig up?” 6:05:07 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Yes, if I pack it it, I pack it out. Even TP and coffee grounds!” 6:06:54 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Tea, if you follow the LNT principles, they say to carry it out with you... how many times have you gone hiking in a relatively well used area and seen those disgusting TP flowers? Unfortunately, TP doesn't decompose nearly as fast as we wish it would... they've done 'scat' studies(for lack of a better word) and found that even a year or two after burial, it looks(and smells) pretty similar to what it did when it was first buried... Peeeeew!” 6:07:50 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “well, I can tell you this ladies..when the temperature falls below freezing the adhesive on your pads stops working and if that isn't bad enough, you are in for one heck of a surprise in sub freezing temps if you don't pre-warm your tampons before you insert them..YIKES!!! Do not, I repeat, do not, leave them in your pack at night outside, then grab one first thing in the morning to put in..HUGE MISTAKE!!” 6:10:52 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “on another now defunk forum this subject came up wrt long distance hiking - generally the best choice was a product called "The Keeper" - see The Keeper for details” 6:13:46 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “I've never seen TP on the trail” 6:22:56 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “next time you hike ice tea keep your eyes open - its every where (sigh)” 6:26:12 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Give them to spock. He'll claim they're all part of a conspiracy.” 6:48:36 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Gordan..ROFLMBO. Yes Hog, the keeper is a favorite of women hikers as well as the sponges too.. If anyone needs more info, websites, etc. email me off list and I will provide links.. Tex” 10:17:55 PM 11/08/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Speaking of tampons...my friend was exspecting her 'friend" during our BP trip last week so had an abundance of tampons. Near the end of the trip she decided she had way too much stuff-food, tampons-ect...and was tring to pawm stuff off. So I took about 1/3 cup of olive oil and one the tampons along with a empty chicken can and made a oil torch light to read by that night. It took a few minites to soak the tampon and get it to light but that thing burned for about 45 minites. The things backpack freaks will do!” 8:52:33 AM 11/09/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “Q - How do you put out a flaming cotex? A - Tampoon it! =80” 10:26:09 AM 11/09/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “This thread just reminded me of an incident involving this type of product. Wildlife biologists use bait stations to attract wildlife for population studies. The local Forest Service office used some super-absorbent pads to hold the bait, basically a rotten fish stew. The pads hold a lot of liquid a long time without drying out. Several are hung overhead just out of reach of any bears and in view of a camera with a motion detector. It worked well, except a government auditor on a random examination of purchases wondered what the hell was some guy doing buying several cases of the things at a local store with a government credit card.” 2:27:18 PM 11/09/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “ROFL Gordo! Can't you just see it... "Honestly Sir, I didn't buy them for me, they're for the bears!"” 3:26:12 PM 11/09/01 RE: GUYS DONT READ THIS POST “A diaphram would work the same as that Keeper and I think would be more comfortable. That Keeper looks like some Medieval instrument of torture.” 6:18:28 PM 11/09/01
