Broke down and got a digitalView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 31 of 31 messages posted.
Broke down and got a digital “OK, I finally thought I must do it. There I was ..... at Walmart. Seriously!! lol Decided on an Olympus D-100. Cheapo at $200. 1.3 megapixels. Resolution up to 1280x960 pixels. Makes a 3.5 MB TIF file at "super high quality." I have discovered in Olympus terms, the "D" line must be for "dummy" (beginner); "C" for "consumer" and "E" for "expert." Guess I'm in the dummy range. LOL!! BUT... can a dummy use the exposure compensation, huh, huh?!?! Looks like a good little camera. Very lightweight. Finally figured out how to bring the photos into computer. Should work on both PC (home) and iMac (work). It included battery charger. Now we'll see how fast it goes through batteries. Uses Smart Media. I'd never seen that before. Lots thinner and smaller than Compact Flash cards. Hope I like it. *smile* (so far so good)” 8:16:38 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “I hope that it turns out good for you Lizs... Hurry up and try it out and let me know how it works, I`ve been thinking about getting one too!” 8:44:24 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “And post some pictures!” 9:15:22 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “That's the one I have. Works just fine and a sweet price. Good luck with it.” 11:11:38 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “I've been resisting too, but this developing (with CDs)is getting expensive. Let us know how you like it.” 11:15:42 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “One more tool in the arsenal...hey Lizs! My camera came with a 16 meg smart media card. I purchased a 64 meg smart card also to give me lots of room. They also have 128 meg cards. I also purchased 2 extra sets (my camera takes 2 AA)of NiMh batteries. Have fun! I took 78 pictures Sat. on one set of batteries and they are still going.” 11:37:05 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “What kind was yours again WW? I've started digging into the differences and am narrowing it down.” 11:39:58 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Fugifilm 2600 Zoom 2.0 mega pixel” 11:45:03 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “I posted a link to some digital pics under ... Lakes Trail Photos ”11:54:03 AM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “I have an Olympus 360DL (Dummy Level) that I bought last year and it works great for an inexpensive digital. It think the one you bought is the newer lighter version.” 12:33:01 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Well, wingding, I don't think we're such dummies now!! LOL!! Violin!! I have some questions for YOU.....hehee OK, this came with a battery charger. Somehow I expected the battery charger would be a combination AC adapter (like the Nikon coolpix 880 where I work). It appears it's not. Did you get the AC adapter? How much did that run? Also, how much are the Smart media cards? And what's a good place to purchase? Somewhere like Best Buy? I didn't check Wally World for the cards. Oh yeah.... I want BIG CARDS!! huh huh YEAH!! 8-) Another nice function of it is you can take macro shots. Wanna get in close to that bug?? DO IT!! One thing was really weird though. I had a heck of a time finding where -- in computer files -- the photos were. I installed, uninstalled, then reinstalled the software. The camera shows up on my PC as a "removeable G drive." WEIRD!! (Violin is this how yours shows up?) Then I have to go two folders deep to get to the photos. I expected it would just show up as a camera icon, like the Nikon does. (Well the handy-dandy PDF manual helps me find that strange drive...heheh) I was gonna post a link to my lovely snout shot of my black and white cat (ahhhhh, now THAT is a good test of COLOR QUALITY!! LMAO!) But it appears that site is down. Nice shot, Wind Walker!!! Later then! :-)” 1:39:27 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “When I want a "big card" I buy a 36 exposrue roll of film! lol! ;-) Have fun with your new toy, lizs. Pictures! We want to see pictures!” 1:47:01 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “OK, here's a shot of a LITTLE BIT of my cat! LOL!! (you'll be sorry you asked!! hehehe) Ottie the cat in his tuxedo” 2:00:08 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Cool shot of your cat! You do good work even when you're messing around (or was this shot more carefully composed then it at first appears?). More! More!” 2:16:18 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Now I know what a mouse feels like! How much do these gizmos Weigh??” 2:19:51 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “I got mine as a gift. I received a battery charger and rechargeable batteries separately. I haven't purchased another card, I just download photos often. I created a 'Digital Photos' folder on my desktop that I download them to, I don't know what the default was. My PC has a 'My Digital Camera' folder under 'My Computer' but I didn't use that.” 2:21:00 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Nice Whiskers! My beard kinda sticks out like that in the morning ;)” 3:36:33 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital 3:41:38 PM 11/12/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Boy howdy! I found the Fuji on the net for $215! Now to drop a tiny hint to the wife I'll e mail the page to her every day until the holidays. Heehee!” 9:21:10 AM 11/13/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Nigal ...Is it a Fugifilm Fine Pix 2600 zoom ? If it is... that's great for you but for me it sucks because I paid $299.” 8:06:34 PM 11/13/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “LOL, Nigal. Yeah, which cam??” 12:20:49 AM 11/14/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “Lizs ...My brother in-law called me from Costco tonight... he bought a 128 meg Smart Media Card for $59.00 there and was trying to tempt me to do the same. The problem is I just bought a 64 meg card for $49.00 ...I should have waited!” 1:00:23 AM 11/14/01 RE: Broke down and got a digital “DULP! Yes it was the same camera but I have never heard of the on-line company that I found the deal on. I'm a bit sceptical of some places. I remember the first "deal" I got from Daymark. Some places deal in reconditioned crap. I actually found a cool Yashica (SP?) camera at PhotoAlley that has a great lens on it and has everything else I want for $273. It got very high marks in the reviews by owners and all their other products are high end stuff. I'm just afraid of what might happen when I need it serviced.” 1:13:39 AM 11/14/01 Soooo, how is it? “Seriously thinking about it now. How's your camera doing, Liz? Still happy with it? I just took my Canon 2000 in for cleaning and check (bought the warranty when I got it). I looked at a Nikon Coolpix 885 & 995 digital cameras. I said I wanted something for backpacking, 30 days out, something lightweight and will hold up in cold. It takes regular batteries if the other one fails .... but, its pricy. Just "thinking" about switching. It'll take a lot of convincing. SnowDude just bought a Sony something or other, weighs 7 oz.” 11:39:47 PM 12/06/01 “I have heard really good things about the Coolpix....Go for it Snowy!!! Took this shot yesterday afternoon...” 11:53:18 PM 12/06/01 “What are the limits on hom much cold these things will tolerate? I'm getting one for the holidays and was wondering if winter clicking is out of the question.” 11:54:54 PM 12/06/01 “I was concerned about the cold too. The Nikon switches to the regular battery if the other quits. That's why he recommended this one for long trips. The regular battery works better in the cold. Looking at specs now.” 12:28:44 AM 12/07/01 “My camera works fine. I've used it for a bunch of shots and now the battery that came with it is done. So I guess I'll be seeing how the rechargeable batteries work. I got a 64 MB Smartmedia card at Best Buy for probably $55 or so over Thanksgiving. That is sure nice. Seems like it takes maybe 70 or so super high quality shots. I need to check to be sure. As far as my camera, I can see something with more than 1.3 megapixels would be nice, as would a zoom. (Remember this is a cheapo!! lol) I've read that 1.3 MP you can maybe go to a 5x7 print, but possibly 4x6 is as big as you should go. So if you want big prints later from your shots, think more megapixels. I don't know how well it will work in the cold...or any digital for that matter. I would guess the problem is pretty much totally the batteries. I would think ALL batteries should be kept in something close to your warm body....(and I'm not sure, but that might create some condensation problem when putting in the camera??) I don't know if cold gums up the mechanisms in the camera itself. Snow Nymph, those Nikons are nice. I use an 880 at work. One thing I've heard --and now have seen with the 880 -- is they really overdo reds. I usually tone down "red" in Photoshop and that makes it better. It's not super bad....errrrr... most of the time...lol!! I'm just being nit-picky and anal. LOL... and I love to play in Photoshop.” 8:03:13 AM 12/07/01 “They said the 995 can be blown up to 11x14 (?). I read last night about the 885 having too much red. Have to do more research on the 995. Also have to pay off my tires before I can buy another camera. btw, nice photo WW!” 9:38:47 AM 12/07/01 “Why, I just got tires too! :-)” 8:02:12 PM 12/07/01 “I have a Coolpix 995 and it's a neat little camera. I was skeptical at first because I am a diehard Nikon 35mm slide shooter, but I wanted something light for backpacking. It's 3.34 megapixels and I've printed out some 8x10's on my Epson 1270 using matte paper that look great. 11x14 would be pushing it but I bet they would be acceptable. The 4x optical zoom makes it a very nice 35mm equivalent of 37-152mm. Forget about using the digital zoom. I've had it only since September so I can't comment on how the battery will hold up in the cold, but I imagine it will work just fine. If you care to see some samples, I placed some shots I took in the White Mts in Oct in a folder. Coolpix 995 White Mts samples” 10:59:06 PM 12/07/01
