Cool, I recognize some of the places listed so far. Sahale Arm is great. Pictures just don't do it justice. Silver Pass, and Marie Lakes are also great. The most scenic place I remember is a tie between Challenger Arm in the Picket Range, which is a rock and tundra arm between glaciers on Mt. Challenger. Tied with that is White Rock Lakes, in the North Cascades. From White Rock Lake, you look across a huge glacial valley to Dome Peak, with huge cliffs above the valley floor, and snow and glaciers above the cliffs.

I have to join the band wagon with Snow Nymph and Idaho Bobby. Marie Lakes is outrageous. Second, for me, would have to be a canoe camp up in Wells Grey Provincial Park (British Columbia).

A gorgeous area near a Collegiate Peaks ghost town. Right by the creek. Sigh.........

Around here? Coldwater Cave DNR land. ;-) (and I'll never tell where that is)

OH, followed by Gribbon Creek valley where Cindy Lu and I camped this summer, across from a trout stream and an old mill..... and the SE Minnesota bluffs and valleys.

I have to say that The Dinkey Lakes Wilderness in the Central Sierra is one of the most beautiful I've been to. Lots of solitude, and a beautiful forrest with some Granet Peaks.

RE: Most scenic campsite
Spock, how did you get to Dome peak without going past White Rock lake? Come up from the Cub Lake side? I always was in the area of Dome Peak when coming off the Ptarmigan Traverse, with White Rock Lake being one of the last camps on that route.

I've done the north and south ends of the Ptarmigan Traverse, but the in-between. Did Dome from Bachelor Creek and Cub Lake. What a bushwhacking mess.

You've got to do it. Its pretty incredible country. The last time I did it we were the first of the season, and we didn't see a single person. We did see 3 wolves on the South Cascade Glacier. My friend has been stormed out of the Ptarmigan Traverse in August!

When I was camped below Spire, I had a wolf pass by me and my tent from about 50 feet away as it went over the top of the ridge. Also saw a silver blur about a hundred yards below, might have been a silver fox? Not sure. I agree it is solitude, neversaw anybody either except near the trailhead.

RE: Most scenic campsite
When I was last in that area, when we were camped at Yang Yang lake we heard all the marmots in the valley break out in whistles and chirps. We looked around but didn't see anything unusual. The next day when we hiked out toward White Rock Lakes, we saw some VERY big dog like prints in the mud below a snow bank. We figured one or two wolves had visited the valley, and thats what set off the marmots.

That same day, when we got to the pass overlooking the South Cascade Glacier, we saw 3 wolves trotting down the glacier. We watched them for awhile, and looked at them through my 400mm lens. I took a few pictures, but they were too far away to positively identify them as wolves. However, by their size and the way they moved, I am sure they were wolves. That was a little creepy, being 3 days from a telephone and outnumbered by wolves. It was quite a sight, though.
