Might even consider the Mossberg youth model 500 in .410 for an easy to handle house gun. You can get buck and slug loads for it if you want versatilty. That slug is a nice .41 caliber, but not for inside use.

BobK, another thing to look for are the tactical loads -- designed for lower recoil, they come in several different shot sizes. Federal has a low-recoil personal defense load in #4. But I agree, a low-brass light skeet load at 10 feet will do the job in most cases.

Remember, your handgun is just to cover your @$$ until you get to where you've stashed your shotgun or carbine.”

Mtnman, I guess it was Plaster that shot the guy from a boat with an m-2... Before I became a civilian we picked up some 50 cals (McMillan or Barret I forget???) for our sniper squad. THAT was a heckuva gun.

BOBK, regarding a shotgun for home defense. Pumpguns have a few definite benefits

1) inexpensive
2) Devestating at close range
3) VERY intimidating appearance and sound when being cocked.
4) are very easy to become familiar with

BUT there are negatives
1) Can be unwieldy and cumbersome
2) many folks dont practice with a pumpgun enough which can lead to a careless "spray and pray" result in a confrontation
3) The biggy is that the "enemy" can be a couple feet away and conceivably grab the weapon and possibly disarm you

“I used to own a SPAS (sporting purpose automatic shotgun (what a joke, that thing was made for war!!!, not sports))...actually it was a semi-automatic. It was very heavy and unwieldy. At least it was intimidating.
I exchanged it for a Remmington 870. Very good shotgun. It came with a pistol grip and 18" barrel...I later bought a longer barrel for hunting.”

I believe carbines were developed for cavalry who needed something with more reach and accuracy than their pistols but couldn't deal with the unwieldy long-barreled rifles of the time. I don't like to buy red meat at the market (who knows what the heck's in it and how fresh it is). Does that make a redneck out of me? I don't really care! I know that venison is much healthier for me and Michigan's deer herd is much healthier for the three that are culled from it by Birch each year. My shotgun is for squirrel hunting, nothing else. I chose the shorter model because it is more comfortable for me not for shooting someone in close quarters.”

I do not want to assume anything so I?ll just ask what your experiences actually are with firearms. Have you ever owned a gun? Have you ever used a firearm? Have you ever been hunting? Have you ever taken a course in firearms use and safety?

When I was younger I did go hunting and found the whole concept rather disturbing.
There would be more humane ways of reducing deer populations but unfortunately that would mean spending money. It's cheaper to send in shooters.
