RE: Favorite gun?
You're right Bunyip, there are more humane ways. The millions of whitetail could all be rounded up and surgically altered so they can't reproduce. That is economically unfeasable. And that would take meat off of many many Michigander's plates. It's okay to dissagree but there really is no better option to reduce the herd where I live. Hopefully the majority of hunters will make a determined effort to bring the animals to death with one careful shot, in MHO humanely.

bunyip, read Heart and Blood: Living With Deer in America by anthropologist Richard K. Nelson, then try again. He's one of our foremost writers on hunting cultures, so you can read his other works on native hunting societies in Alaska. Plus he's a Wisconsin homeboy, now transplanted to the 49th state.

BTW, is clown season before, after or concurrent with mime season?

Bunyip, seems you're not too fond of guns.
Would you let yourself or your loved ones, be harmed by a human or animal instead of using a weapon, be it gun, bat or screwdriver to defend yourself?
Personally, I rather be judged by my peers, than carried by my peers.

Sorry, I ate to much clown.

I guess I would have to be carried out in a beir by my peers. I'm non-violent. Wouldn't know how to defend myself with a screw driver anyway, and proud that I dont.

I like eating meat, it's guns I dislike and that fact that almost anybody can have one.
I tend to forget how ingrained gun culture is in the U.S. I wondered why there would be so many people interested in guns at hiking site and not nearly enough people criticizing their use.

The spark that finally ignited the war with the mother gountry was that they were sending troops to take away our guns so we couldn't rebel against teh King. To enslave a people you must first disarm them..... That's why that testy little second amandment id in our constitution and why its #2 instead of #22. Its the teeth behind free speach.

RE: Favorite gun?
The symbolic attraction of guns for sexually frustrated young men is a fascinating subject which needs to be explored. It's obvious that the gun as devastating phallic tool gives any average dork the predictably perfect, mind-blowing ejaculations not vouchsafed by wrinkly Weak Willy, who rears his pointy head or cowers lumpishly at the worst possible moments. Eric Harris, the main brain in the Columbine affair, had a fetish for shotguns and waxed rhapsodic in classroom compositions about both the barrel and the shell. Quite impressive, I'm sure.

"This is my rifle; this is my gun. One is for shooting; the other's for fun!" In a comic World War II memoir that I read long ago, a clumsy infantryman had to shout this mantra as he stood at attention, one hand gripping his rifle and the other his pen!s. We didn't really need Freud to tell us about phallic symbols: The identification of guns with male sexuality is already implicit in Emily Dickinson's extraordinary poem, "My Life Had Stood a Loaded Gun," in which the spinster muse transsexually reinvents herself as a bedroom blunderbuss with a killer "Yellow Eye."

Arguing in my first book that the Western paradigm of thought as aggressive projection and penetration would end up in cinema as the arrowlike light beam of the darkened movie theater, I pointed out that while the Chinese may have invented gunpowder, they used it only for fireworks and never developed the lethal lobbing tube of the European cannon and musket. As a tomboy whose Amazonian craze was always for swords and spears, I've never felt the allure of guns, but I think I understand their hypnotic high-tech beauty -- their well-oiled intricacy; cool, smooth skin; and startlingly dense, compact heft, which gives the owner so exhilarating a sense of coiled power. The gun as mutant pen!s.

More later, Bastards. I've got a show to prepare for. 1-800-DR-LAURA

LOL, BobK! I, too, have experienced that feeling with my SLRs.

As for all this gun/male association, clearly bunyip is against guns and my impression is that bunyip is male; OTOH, my wife is most definitely female and she owns three rifles, a shotgun and a pistol. Seems gender may not be the issue here.

Bunyip, so you like meat, but not violence. How exactly do you dispatch the animals you eat?

RE: Favorite gun?
As you all know, I avoid contentious threads and this one looked like trouble. I'm not going to mention any of my guns because of our new and repressive firearms law.

I applied for a Possession Only Licence just over a year ago and still haven't received it. It is technically illegal for me to buy ammunition without it, but the police are not enforcing the law because it is such a mess - large chains, such as Canadian Tire and Hudson Bay Northern Stores are however. In rural and remote areas these stores are often the only ones that cater to country people's needs. The government lost a thousand licence applications from Innuit (Esquimeau) subsistance hunters in the new territory of Nunnavut this sunmmer and only one person who speaks Inuktitut is on staff - a nightmare. U.S. tourists must purchase a 50$ permit EVERY time they enter Canada to hunt. This also applies to Alaskan bush pilots who are required by Alaskan law to carry a weapon (yes, every time).

Among the questions asked are: Have you been arrested in the past five years? Have you been divorced in the past five years? Have you suffered from depression in the last five years? I was off for three months on sick leave for burnout in 1999 and had to answer yes to the last. I have been put into the investigation bin.

If the government wants to turn this 53 year-old rural high school teacher/rugby coach/volleyball coach into a criminal, so be it. I'll turn in something to please them - otherwise fu˘k'em. Don't let it happen there!

By the way 'home invasions' are up 300% in Canada, while domestic violence has been declining for several years.

gremlin, that's tough to deal with. Just remember, you're welcome to come over here to northern Wisconsin or the U.P. Part of my roots on my dad's side are in Canada. You won't even have to change your accent. And you'll still live farther north than many Canadians.

Michigan got concealed carry this year, and it has just been proposed in the Wisconsin legislature. Our right to possess guns for lawful personal protection, sport, hunting, and collecting is written into the Wisconsin Constitution.

RE: Favorite gun?
Gremlin, I hear you. I'm a potential criminal (maybe I'm already) because I haven't re-registered my legally purchased firearms.

My FAC (Firearms Acquisition Certificate) have expired 3 years ago, so I can't buy ammo (or guns) legally anymore.

The govt. new law is a major tax grab and used to punish law abiding gun owners. Do they really think criminals are going to register their firearms?

You Yanks down south, protect your rights to bear arms...don't let what's happening up here, happen to you guys.

RE: Favorite gun?
What has eating meat got to with my dislike of guns. It's like saying that if you hate shovels you cant eat vegetables.Besides most livestock these days is electrocuted, not particularly pretty, but a lot more humane.
As a serious question, is practical to herd the large populations of deer that you have into pens and then transport them elsewhere, new pastures or butchers? It isnt in Australia as the populations of deer are so small and well hidden scrubby gullies.

Re your rights, using the same logic, you would be quite within your rights to arm yourselves with nuclear weapons.
Just image the likes of David Koresh with the bomb.
If I'm misinformed regarding this last thought please clarify WHY you cant have the bomb.

RE: Favorite gun?
You were the one who brought up the hunting thing Bun. Yes, I find it much more humane to have an animal spend it?s entire life in a corral with hundreds of other cows, standing up to their knees in their own sh!t, pumped full of al kinds of hormones and crap. All to end up stunned and hanging from a hook where they might be dead but then again they might be getting skinned alive. That?s a lot better than living a life free and natural in the wild and end up with a short time of pain rather than a whole life of misery. People who claim this just need to be honest, they don?t have the stomach to kill their own food and have no problem in giving the responsibility of the abuse to animals that occur on their behalf to others.

If it?s so easy to capture and transplant animals why don?t they do that with the peaceable kangaroos and the harmless field mice that run rampant down under rather than being poisoned and shot?

We do have laws restricting weapons of mass destruction. In most places you can?t even possess dynamite without a special permit. There is an equal level of responsibility that goes along with rights. Or at least there?s supposed to be.

Have a great day Bunyip.

RE: Favorite gun?
Nigal and Sassafras, thanks for the cogent responses to Bunyip.

Bunyip, try to respond to the issue - it wasn't about eating meat, it was about killing the animal to get it. As Nigal so clearly shows, the meat industry is not what you would call non-violent, nor particularly hygenic.

After you finish the suggested reading by Richard K. Nelson, who will certainly answer your question about deer management options, try to track down an essay by the Yale University surgery professor Richard Selzer called "How to Build a Slaughterhouse." It's a study of form & function & culture.
