You can own a tank, but it is hell to get ammunition for it.” 1:39:49 PM 11/16/01 RE: Favorite gun? “Bunyip, electrocution is more humane than a bullet? Where are you living...though I havent been shot with anything larger than a BB I have been shocked far too many times. No voltage high enough to kill me but it hurt like crazy. The deer I shot tonite didnt feel a thing, GUARANTEED! It was dead before it exhaled its last breath.” 8:44:34 PM 11/17/01 RE: Favorite gun? “There are so many good ones it's hard to pick a favorite. When I'm hunting I like a small sidearm, just in case, like my taurus 38 spec. or glock 26. For home defense I like either my ruger security six .357 mag or the glock 21. I also have a mossberg pump with a "slugster" barrel, which in fact is a short 18.5 inch barrel that buckshot, or any shot, can be shot from. For rifles I have a savage .308 bolt action that has a sweet trigger and is a real tack driver. I'd really like a ruger ranch rifle or an ar15 but there's only so much money to go around. I've noticed that people I meet that are "antigun" are the ones with the road rage, short temper, and on prozac or something. Not making any judgements, just an observation.” 8:46:35 PM 11/17/01 RE: Favorite gun? “Margo, I just saw a Ruger Mini-14 for $488, a nice combo of the marlin ranch/ar15” 8:48:03 PM 11/17/01 RE: Favorite gun? “(Puts fingers in ears) NA NA NA NA NA, CANT HEAR ANY THING NA NA NA NA. Pass me another prozac and get the hell outta my way, where'd you learn ta drive ya lunatic!” 7:54:05 AM 11/18/01 RE: Favorite gun? “LOL Bunyip!” 9:18:16 AM 11/18/01 RE: Favorite gun? “Okay, I've gone back and forth with the gun issue and I am currently unable to make a coherent point on the issue. But I have some thoughts rolling around in my head... 1) I can't stand people in the cities commenting on how rural people should live their lives. Hunting is a way of life where I live. It's not any more or less sophisticated than urban hobbies. 2) If the true goal of hunting in Michigan is maintenance of a healthy deer herd, then why do state agencies spend so much time crafting natural areas to be more deer-friendly. I think management practices - because of the economic consquences of hunting - select for game species over less economically desirable species. Science, not economics, should rule ecosystem management. 3) The mutual disdain that gun-people and urban environmentalists have for each other is very destructive politically. If both sides got together, they would be an almost unstoppable force in many areas of this country. Divided we fall. 4) In this age of terrorism, I don't think that terrorists should be able to buy guns at fairs and festivals that reach underneath government radar. The right to bear arms is like all rights - it has limits. If I'm waiting two hours at the border or in the airport line, then gun owners should be able to wait a week for a background check. 5) Baiting: I don't necessarily have problems with baiting, but we have a TB problem in Michigan. It spreads at hunter's bait piles. The MI DNR has done almost nothing to stop this, although it could result in the destruction of the Michigan cattle herd. Again, let science rule, not economics. I don't have any problems with gun ownership or hunting in principle. The devil, of course, is in the details. Many of the loudmouths on both sides of this debate take extreme positions, leaving the centrist majority without a place to stand.” 9:38:27 AM 11/18/01 RE: Favorite gun? “5) I agree totally. The DNR has actually instigated new rules on how much and how often a hunter can bait but there is no way to make sure hunters abide by the rules except for sending a conservation officer out to check piles. There aren't enough officers to catch poachers much less folks who dump two pails of beets instead of one. I wouldn't mind seeing baiting banned at all. I think you have to be realistic about it though and know that bird feeders and sweet little old people who want to see deer in their back yard do as much damage as hunters. Frankly I'd like to see a stiff fine for anyone feeding anything besides birds. I'm sick and tired of the dang squirrels running over my toes everytime I step foot out my front door because they expect an oatmeal cookie from me! The elderly lady next door feeds them all the time.” 9:59:29 AM 11/18/01 RE: Favorite gun? “Sassy,.. Victor`s rat trap and a peanut secured to it with a tiny rubberband should do in your situation...Enjoy the dumplings!LOL You don`t always need a gun to do what needs to be done! Now the rest of you do know I was kidding dont you? Sure I was,..there`s many ways to enjoy a good mess of squirrels!LOL” 10:11:14 AM 11/18/01 RE: Favorite gun? “This recipe was by John aka Gray Beard Squirrel Stew Ingredients: 1 squirrel, quartered 1 cup diced onion 2 large tomatoes (from your garden) or 1 can of tomatoes Assorted fresh ,or canned veggies Preparation: Sprinkle seasoned salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (optional) liberally on the meat. Pour some cooking oil into a large pot (dutch oven). Sauté the meat with the onions until well browned. Drain the excess oil, add about 2 cups water, and bring to a boil. Cut up the tomatoes and add. If you use canned tomatoes add them now. Turn down the heat, and let slow cook for at least an hour. Important: older squirrels may require cooking longer than an hour. Check periodically for tenderness. If you don't you will have a hard time chewing the meat. After the meat is tender, add the veggies, carrots, potatoes, banana pepper, what ever you like. Cook until the veggies are done. An option you can use is, cook up your favorite pasta and serve over the pasta. (eliminate the potatoes). That's it, nice and simple ~ Good eating: John This recipe was by Nova Squirrel Pie Clean, skin and cut two squirrels into small pieces. Soak in salted water, or water with a little vinegar added, changing water several times. Drain, dry and roll in seasoned flour. Sauté in pork or bacon fat until slightly browned, then place in greased pie dish or bowl, add two cups liquid (made up of wine, cider, beer, crushed fruit , or a little vinegar, and water or stock), salt and pepper, one thinly sliced onion, herbs of your choice. Cover and cook on top stove for 1 ˝, or in moderate oven for two hours. Remove and thicken the stock with a little flour. Take out part of the gravy and add tomatoes, sauce or catsup, to serve with the pie. Ruger 10/22, great tin can killer. 1911 45 auto, ok it only holds 8, but that just give me more insentive to practice. I guess what it all boils down to for me is any gun that shots straight is my favorite.” 1:53:39 AM 11/20/01 RE: Favorite gun? “I've had a couple days to think about this thread. I still feel the same and feel it comes down to personal ideologies. Isnt it great that we can actually have this discussion without fear of censorship or recrimination, even though you are wrong.” 6:54:34 AM 11/20/01 RE: Favorite gun? “LOL Bunyip! If it's one thing I love is a good sense of sarcasm...that and a good pun. I respect you views and opinions...as long as you keep them to yourself. lol!” 9:12:45 AM 11/20/01 RE: Favorite gun? “bunyip ...... bunyip ...... by any chance,is that an aussie euphamisim for fart ? as in : my buns are yipping ! btw ,what was the final decision on the name 'waft' as in 'waftrat' is it a code word for posterior excratory orfice activity as proposed by certain ;ongtime posters,or is its meaning still uncertain ?” 9:47:23 AM 11/20/01 RE: Favorite gun? “bunyip n.(Austral.) a legendary monster said to inhabit swamps and lagoons. "Waftrats" I think you'll find are a particularly American creatures, said to inhabit this site.” 9:59:11 AM 11/20/01 RE: Favorite gun? “ah, the bunyip is the equivalent of our hodag, the legendary creature that inhabits the deep forests and cedar swamps of the Northwoods.” 10:55:52 AM 11/20/01 “ ![]() Beretta 950 Jetfire, 9.8 ounces unloaded, 6,35 mm (.25 ACP) 8 rounds. Light for the trail.” 11:30:10 PM 5/31/02 “So how about a combination gun/GPS/cellphone?” 11:42:53 PM 5/31/02 “Gun/cellphone a good idea, the phone where the grip is. But where put the GPS?” 12:01:56 AM 6/01/02 “Congratulations. You are troll number 78 for this week.” 12:59:42 AM 6/01/02 “I'd say Glock g-30..small enough to conceal..big enough to be accurate+ it has take down power...2nd amendment..may it endure” 3:01:54 AM 6/01/02 “lol @ tilt” 12:33:26 PM 6/01/02 “mattel makes a really cool water gun... large caliber, lots of ammo, good distance too :P” 12:38:03 PM 6/01/02 “I was thinking of a water cannon, myself” 2:28:17 PM 6/01/02 3:26:26 PM 6/01/02 Bear Deterrent “Don't think I wquld have been that calm. But then, maybe she didn't taste good. What was she wearing?” 3:29:23 PM 6/01/02 Glock 19 6:51:38 PM 6/01/02 Jetfire “I own the jetfire. It is very size efficient. A lot of small rounds. I carry it everyday but it is not enough for what I believe to be a legitimate threat on or off the trail. Glock 19 does it for me. I would also consider the Glock 21 and S&W 586 in .357.” 6:57:15 PM 6/01/02 Are Gun owners welcome???? “"Congratulations. You are troll number 78 for this week." Tilt ------------- Gun owners can talk on this site to. Any problems with that??? -------- -- "Political correctness is just tyranny with manners." ~~ Charlton Heston” 6:59:43 PM 6/01/02 “I've gotta tell ya Tommy, you say that you have an interest in backpacking... but it's kinda funny that you never have anything to say about it. I think the last time you posted here contains the very first occurrence of the word 'backpack' in anything you have ever written here. What was it? "I like to backpack."? I remain somewhat skeptical. When you said that you were "referred here by members of firearms relates bulletin boards" (sic)... THAT I have no difficulty believing. Which boards were those, might I ask? I used to find it somewhat surprising that whenever the 'guns in the woods' debate would resurface at Backpacker, 30 or 40 people who never posted there before (or since) would miraculously appear within hours. That isn't a 'grass roots' response; that's 'Astroturf'. It's manufactured. It's meant to skew perceptions. It's dishonest. As far as this board goes, I think you're wasting your time and Matt's bandwidth with your reams of propaganda. You don't discuss; you simply regurgitate. Though most people try to keep an open mind, this is one issue where people appear to already know where they stand from a relatively early age. I also think tactics such as yours alienate the very people you would want to win over to your cause. People rarely like being told what to think. I believe this is one reason the NRA has a PR problem. Past performance by you and your brothers in arms sets the stage for a warm welcome --- and I'm not one of your "anti-gunners". Next question?” 8:40:12 PM 6/01/02 “"So how about a combination gun/GPS/cellphone?" ... so you talk in the butt, and listen in the barrel? better watch it, they'll put you in the institution for that one.” 8:48:25 PM 6/01/02 “Sorry, Bude, but whether you meant to or not it seems you stepped into it right off the bat. I was just kidding around with you. You actually referred to being on the trail, <G>” 8:50:32 PM 6/01/02 Tilt: Have a beer dude! “Apology accepted Tilt. How about apologizing to Tommy Gun while you're at it. I haven't been around here long, but I see lots of non-backpacking topics. If someone wants to talk about guns, so what? Who died and made you king? Have a beer and kick back. And tell us about your favorite gun, even if you don't have one. Damn, some people go off easy.” 11:57:38 PM 6/01/02 Beretta 950 Jetfire vs. Glock 19 “Weight: --Beretta 9.80 ounces unloaded --Glock 20.99 ounces unloaded Height: --Beretta 87 mm --Glock 127 mm Barrel Length: --Beretta 120 mm --Glock 102 mm Caliber: --Beretta 6,35 mm (.25 ACP) --Glock 9x19 mm To me it comes down to this. The Glock is better made and can stand loads of abuse from the elements. But the Beretta is half the weight. Both are compact. Since you can't use a handgun to protect yourself from large mammals such as bears I'll go with the Beretta. Every pound counts to a lightweight backpacker.” 12:26:56 AM 6/02/02 “You're right there, B. You're new; you don't know the situation. BTW... it's a Browning "Humpback" Twelve.” 1:22:34 AM 6/02/02 “i need a gun fer da trail. how much do the beretta's cost? How much for the humpback 12? If i was rich, i wouldnt have to ask.” 2:59:23 AM 6/02/02 “I dunno about cost, Strat. I inherited the humpback from my grandfather (it's a sentimental favorite). You don't happen to know where I can pick up a pre-war herringbone D-28 dirt cheap do ya? <GRIN>” 3:24:12 AM 6/02/02 “oh yeah, i got a gross of them in ma basement{eyeroll}” 3:35:24 AM 6/02/02 “shoot, you hit a ber between the eyes hes going down, but dont miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 9:32:52 AM 6/02/02 “ ![]() BANG BANG you're dead!” 11:42:23 PM 6/02/02 “ 9:03:47 AM 6/03/02 “?” 5:13:06 PM 7/02/03 “Berreta 92FS” 7:52:32 PM 7/02/03 “I love the ruger 10/22 international that Sass got me for Christmas years back...Oh yeah and my Remington 700 ADL in 30.06” 8:22:28 PM 7/02/03 “Its a toss up!!!! At present, its either the M1894 in .44 or the Knight .50. Would like to get a 'yellow boy'!!! Birch, I'm kicking myself now, because years ago I was selling those 20-30rd'ers Bulter creek Mag's and I never bought more than a one.” 10:52:48 PM 7/02/03 “I only have a paintball gun.” 10:56:59 PM 7/02/03 Jump to Page << prev
