the colt M4-A1 is far superior to the antiquated M-16, but I would have to say my favorite weapon would have to be the HK MP 5 or the FN P-90. The P-90 offers the accuracy and penetration of the MP-5 with a much larger top load clip. If I wanted a longer range rifle I would still choose the SSG 552 which offers comporable fire rate and accuracy with the addition of a scope. In terms of side arms I would choose the Sig P-228 or the or the .45 USP Tactical.

the jackhammer is worthless. It always overheats and jams and is a very poor tactical weapon. The M-3 and XMP are much better choices.

RE: Favorite gun?
So many choices in a thread made for me.... Almost anything designed by John M. Browning but the 1911 model Colt in 45ACP is tops. In a close second to Browning design is the Thompson 1928-A1.

RE: Favorite gun?
DM and Teabag, how much time have you spent behind the trigger with your "favorite"guns? The list reads like a GUCCI shopping list...

Abe Lincoln...shot with a poor quality 1860's era pistol (head shot)

JFK shot by a piece of crap Italian bolt action rifle, while moving...3 shots(one head, one shoulder plus another victim...#3 I forget)

Carlos Hathcock 93 confirmed kills,with a modified M-14 and Remington 700 (i think)

Major John Plaster, over 100 confirmed kills with a variety of military and civilian firearms.

Its not about names,ballistics,penetration...its about confidence in the firearm and SHOT PLACEMENT. Stop reading guns and ammo...please!

Tea, the Spas 12 is not an automatic. Its a combination pump and semi-automatic.

Hathcock mostly used a WInchester Mod. 70 in 30-06. Some was with a Browning M2- 50 cal with a scope screwed to it while on top of a mountain in Vietnam. I think his record was 2,500 meters (for the novice that's more than 1.5 miles)

Mtnman thanks for the correction on Carlos' weapon. I own a Rem 700 in 30-06..I guess that I think eveyone should LOL. Do you recall if it was Carlos or Plaster who shot an NVA sniper with an M-2 from a moving sampan from over 600 meters... now that is some shootin.

RE: Favorite gun?
My newest, of course; a nice Ruger 22/45 .22 target pistol that came home with me Sunday and went straight to the range for 100 rounds of break-in/sight-in. Going to be great for plinking, along with my wife's 10/22 rifle. Also mucho cheaper than an afternoon of 9mm paper punching, even with basic FMJ loads.

But my stainless Rossi M-85 revolver in 38spl. w/full shroud and vent-rib 3" barrel and tropical wood grips is still the prettiest. Ah, classic revolver stylin' can be sweet.

And yes, this counts as a gear thread.

I don't recall it from his book and that's what I get my knowledge of him from. He was positioned on a hill with a Browning M2 50 cal sandbagged down and fixed with a scope and I do recall him hitting a bicycle way way out. The M2 weighs about 84 pounds and apparently has a very stable (obvoiusly heavy around 400 grains I think) bullet so it is good for long range accuracy may be the same guy. He was a fantastic long range shooter and had several 1000 mtr trophies in the USMC. I've done some long range Hipower and its HARD. I have a Rem 700 BDL in 270 Win. Love it, its very similar to yours.

RE: Favorite gun?
Calnative, I picked the 22/45 because it has a polymer frame and grip, along with a bull barrel to give it some front end weight, that make it very similar to the feel of our KP95s, making it nice for practice. The clip release button is even in the same place. Nice to have a completely adjustable rear sight, too.

Hey, we've got some real firearm aficionados here! I need some advise. I want to get a shotgun for the home. What would you recommend in a 12-guage with a barrel short enough to barely be legal. And I would rather not spend a ton of money. Any suggestions?

RE: Favorite gun?
BobK - for a real deal, find a Wal-Mart that has the Mossberg 500 "Defender" model in stock. 18" barrel with an 8-round magazine tube, synthetic stock. A couple years ago I picked up one for $189.

If you have more to spend, though, find a gun shop with a mil-spec Mossberg 590 with parkerized finish -- an upgraded version of the 500 that has a variety of barrel/mag capacity options.

RE: Favorite gun?
That Mossberg should have a pistol grip attachment too.

Think about an alarm and better outside lighting, a safe for locking up valuables or getting a good size dog. Thorny bushes around windows work get great.

Well, I already have two Dobermans. They are excellent deterents to the neighborhood lowlife, as well as outstanding bed warmers and general household comedians! But I do want to replace the really crappy shotgun that was given to me a while back.

I have heard a Mossberg gun would make a good choice. And $189 works for me. Thanks!

RE: Favorite gun's?
Plinked Browning buck mark has a better feel in the hand and more accurate that the mark II of 22/45
Sig 220 .45 cal great feel in the hand and less complicated that the 1911(what I consider an experts gun ) ps I have a kimber great gun but the sig wins
Ruger 10/22 cheep and fun
Howa .308 cal great gun good price and more accurate out of the box that rem 700
Glock 33 .357sig it is a hand full (because it is not 8) ) I don?t like glock in .40cal they had a KB problem early on I do have a KKM barrel in .40 this is nice though
Ruger MINI 14 all the love of a AR15 none of the hassle ,it looks like a sporter (witch it is) but still has the potential
BobK Mossberg 500 "Defender" great choice ergonomics are very good and will work every time stay away from the Winchester it has some function problems . if you don?t like the Mossberg Rem 870 is always a good choice .

Barret (sp) .50cal is the coolest and made just a couple of miles away . but will be on my wish list a very long time

Also a good shot gun (in pump) is a Remington 870 with a 20" barrel. Mine ran be about $200 from Scheels. The 870 is a real work horse and can take a beating and never fail.

RE: Favorite gun?
BobK:
A short barreled shotgun, even a 20 guage is fine is the best for home defense. I suggest a pump but a side by side is fine. By short barrel anything from 18(legal) to 24 inches in a cylinder bore (no choke) I use a Mossberg for this like Pekka, Don't do the pistol grip for 2 reasons 1. its much harder to control recoil and hit anything and 2. it just looks bad if you ever needed it and then say the family of the perp sue and they drag that thing out in court. You know it looks like an evil person's weapon that MEANT to KILL someone not like honest John's bird gun. One more thing NO 00 buck loads OK. Keep at least the first few rounds as some low brass trap/skeet load with 71/2 -9 shot. Two reasons here too 1. it won't shoot through the wall and kill someione in the next room or apartment (energy dissipates in the first side of the sheetrock) and 2. It is like the rule above (it looks better in court than blasting the poor intruder with some big time 3" mag. 00 buck load)Trust that any shotgun load no matter how mild is terribly destructive inside 20 yards.
