I tend to agree with roseymonster's approach. Just because there is another cause, does not mean the original correlation was invalid.

You can roll a ball down a hill 100 times, and if one time it hits a rock, it does not mean that there was no correlation between you rolling the ball, and it going down the hill. There absolutely was a correlation.

HPD's arguement.

"I said in the 3rd grade that there is no such thing as global warming, and that we would all freeze to death. Get your coats boys, there's a N'Eastner blowing up".

Where roseymonster's theory falls apart is that in the last 130 years, there is a correlation between temperature, co2 emmissions, AND sunspot activity -- except for the last 13 years when co2 levels were HIGHEST. The problem is that if you go back in time, co2 levels and sunspot activity were always correlated.

Therefore, the overlap of the industrial revolution was a red herring.

Since 1998, temperatures have dropped roseymonster. Let's not go down this road again.

Where HPD's argument fails is the he fails to recognize that rising temps associated with sunspot activity have drastically higher in the past century.

Let's look at it this way:

Lifting weights causes bigger muscles. That is a direct correlation.

Lifting weights while on steroids caused a vastly increased output and rapid increase in muscle mass. That is causation.

Atmostpheric particulates are causing an increase in warming disproportionate to that which would result through sunspot activity alone.

I think it may have leveled off for a bit, but the temp did not rise.

Please add the appropriate words to make that a sentence. I do not understand it.

That is just a theory, unsupported by data.

Oh, it is clearly supported.

What I think you meant to say is that you don't see enough to prove the theory.

ok, well, thanks for the discussion guys. My intent was to discuss the 2 claims by roseymonster, and I think we've covered them thoroughly. Until next time...

“I would argue for more homo novels. More gays would result in less procreation which would result in less exhalation, which would result in less CO2 being produced, which would result in reduced global warming.

I think we solved it with that one.”

I found an error in my study. After being questioned on whether or not the the people identified as homosexuals were homosexuals before they read the novels, we applied for additional government grants and reran the test with a new pool of candidates who we questioned before and after reading the books. The facts showed that the percentage of homosexuals before reading was much lower than the percentage of homosexuals after reading. This is now indisputable proof that reading gay novels will turn you gay.

A curious but inconsequential effect reported by a number of participants is that the reading of novels with positive homosexual role models caused them to reexamine their prior decision to hide their homosexuality and to "come out of the closet". Although the % of participants reporting this is the same as the percentage increase of participants that were turned gay by reading novels, it has no bearing on the need for increased legislation to stop producing homosexual novels.

Concerning your concern for global warming, please pay no attention to the studies that say they use our data to show that banning homosexual books has no effect on global warming since the homosexual novels do not create gays since the gays were gay before reading the novels but just weren't reporting it. Those studies are using stolen and corrupted data from our tests. As a security measure we have since destroyed all of our data so this can not happen again.

I'm not clear as to exactly where people are disagreeing. I agree that sun spots and solar activity seem to have quite a correlation to cylical changes in temperature. There are other cycles on earth like la nina and el nino that seem to also have an impact on hurricanes and other annual weather patterns - and these may have some relationship to solar activity.

On top of that, I argue that there is a strong upward trend in temperatures that has emerged with increasing clarity since around 1975 that cannot be explained by sun spots or solar activity.

If what HPD is claiming is that sun spots do have a strong relationship with climate cycles - I agree with him.

If he or anyone else is trying to show that there is not a strong global warming component that can't be reasonably related to sun spots (which is what some people are arguing) then I disagree and argue that the series of graphs HP offers proves my point.
