AT in Pennsylvania
I haven't gotten the maps yet...but was wondering if anyone knows about camping sites between Wind Gap and Delaware Water Gap.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Fritz, I think your thread is getting lost in the haystack. You might need a "Grab Their Attention" thread title.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Fritz... I really don't think there is any campsites between those two points. What are the regulations when it comes to the AT? Can you camp where there isn't a designated campsite? If so there are some spots that you could pitch a tent... Hey! I just lied to you! I just remembered there is a campsite right near Kirkridge. If you are coming from WindGap there is a campsite after you cross over Rt. 191 . I'm sure SirPete can confirm this.

Fritz, I'm at work but I have information at home and I'll post something tonight. I've done that section. It's about 15 miles of rolling quite rocky trail. I don't recall any specific campsites but my lil book might show something.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Fritz-

It's the Kirkridge Shelter. I think it's a older small one that sleeps about 6, but has a nice view. Between there and Wind Gap you'll be walking on pointy rocks most of the way.

I found this amazing site with all kinds of info.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Violin, how do you come up with all that obscure stuff? You're the best! (Oops, how many syllables was that?)

I did look at the general Trails database here and didn't get shelter info. Missed the AT database. Thanks for rubbing my nose in pointing out the readily available info. ;-)

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
That was easy, eh Fritz? There is also a water tap on the blue trail near the shelter, very close to the Kirkridge Retreat.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Thanks guys.

Now, since there are obviously several of you who know these trails, let me ask a different question. Where's a good place on the near-by AT to do a one-night BP, total only 15 miles or so?

Rt 206 to Millbrook/Blairstown road. Part of the trip we just did. It is 14.6 miles! Lot's of views and easier on you feet that the former choice.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Thanks, I'll have to see if I can find the maps.

It is very hard for me to get a whole weekend away, with all the family activities, so I am looking for ways to get out for just 24 hours or so...

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
Another possibility if you can't do a point to point is at the Water Gap on the NJ side. You could start by doing the Mt Tamminy loop, about 4 miles and a super view. At the end of the loop you can pick up the AT and head towards Sunfish Pond. SP is 3.75 miles from the start and backpacker site #2 is about .5 miles before SP. Hike around SP, about 2 miles, and take the Dunnfield Trail (green) back to your car. All total, about 13-14 miles.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
I'd have to second sirpete's suggestion. It's a very nice section. There is a really nice campsite just off the trail with awesome views of the Delaware River to the west and the farmland to the east. It's a little hard to find and I wish I had marked it on my maps because I'm not sure I could find it again. We woke up there one morning and fog had filled the valley. It looked like the glaciers that carved the Water Gap had returned. Hope you find it.

Another nice section nearby is North of Port Clinton going through the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in PA. Nice views at the Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock.

Thanks, I've been to the Pinnacle many times, over the past 25 years....but never via the AT.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
With all the Fav threads running amok, this one almost got lost. V, I'm wondering if that campsite you're talking about is around Rattlesnake Mt/Bird mt which is between the Brink shelter and the Buttermilk Falls trail. We got treated to some great views up there both ways and saw some nice camp site possiblities.

Fritz, if you're going to go that route (rt 206-millbrook) and you don't have any maps, let me know. I can snap a few digi pics and upload them for you.

RE: AT in Pennsylvania
I don't have my maps with me but I it was in that general area. The campsite itself was in an area that had large granite slabs with grass covered soil in between forming several long terraces. I think we went through some tall evergreens to the right of the trail to get there but it has been several years and I might be confusing it with a different spot.
