Cat stove?
I saw a design for a stove made out of cat food cans on another site. Has anyone here used anything like this and if so, did it work very well.

RE: Cat stove?
I've never tried it, but I hear that Siamese give off a lot of heat and can boil a quart of water in about 3 min.

RE: Cat stove?
I made one, but after making a few Pepsi can stoves I liked them better and threw the cat stove in the recycle bin. I liked the Pepsi can stove because the flame was more controlled and burned evenly. After the cat stove's flame creeped around my pot of soup scorching the side and burning my hand, that's when I decided I didn't like it. Also, when the alcohol burns off the fiberglass stinks and I didn't like that either especially under a tarp where it lingers for a while. It may boil a bit faster, but I'm not in that much of a hurry. Make one of each and compare for yourself and use the one you like best. A lot of people do like the cat stove, but I'm just not one of them.

I thought this was one of the TROLL PORKUS-BIPRODUCTIS threads so I didn't bother opening it at first. Just search the threads here and you'll find a lot. Unfortunately we often wonder from the thread topic so the title won't always get you there. Here are a few on the topic:

RE: Cat stove?
My cats can't cook either.

I tried to make a pepsi can stove yesterday, and five bandaids later, I finished. But it leaked. THe superglue on the outer seam didn't work. I'm going to try to find some foil heat proof tape tomorrow, and try it again. But the really hard part is trying to fit the two former can bottoms together, one over the other, without causing any indentations that will cause the seal to leak. TRicky, takes practice. I'm going to try the freeze one and heat the other trick that Le Subtil mentioned once.

Try covering the seam with a bead of epoxy glue.

RE: Cat stove?
I know we had some, but I couldn't find it. But the tape seems faster, no waiting for the glue to dry. The superglue took forever to dry on the aluminum.

RE: Cat stove?
I tried regular foil tape once and it didn't work because the heat broke the bond and it fell off. I think the tape made to resist heat would probably work. You may still need some epoxy to glue the stove into a potstand if you decide to make that type.

RE: Cat stove?
I tried making a pepsi can stove, but I made the mistake of using muffler repair putty instead of flue tape or JB Weld. Stuff has no strength. I made a cat stove a while back using parrafin soaked cardboard instead of alcohol and fiberglass as the wick. It definitely had some possibilities. Caveat Emptor: Don't try to extinguish it, just let it burn out. It will backflash on you. I'm going to play around with different wick configurations to see if I can boost output. I prefer to work with wick style stoves vs pressure vessels. They're much less of a pain in the a$$ to construct and tinker with.

Flue Tape or Muffler Tape works the best.

RE: Cat stove?
The Bondo glue that RichB used on the pepsi can stove that he gave me worked good. But where do you buy that stuff? Is it a form of epoxy or in a jar with a brush, or what?

RE: Cat stove?
That's just plain old Bondo that you would use for body repair on a car. I used that because it's strong and it's all I had at the time I made the stove. It will be cheaper just to buy epoxy or jb weld and it will be easier to work with instead of Bondo.

Okay, epoxy or jb weld, I'll get some and give it a try, but I'm going to try to buy some muffler tape, and try that too.

RE: Cat stove?
It wasn't dangerous, it just leaked at the end of the 1 oz burn, at the seam around the center. It also smelled bad compared to the stove that RichB made. I don't know if the pot stand had a finish that was burning off, or if the smell was the superglue.

RE: Cat stove?
Ms.Splash...You don't need to seal the seams of a pepsican burner, and don't waste your time and money trying to do so. I've made enough to know that the leaks don't matter at all, they just act like an extra burner hole to emit a flame from.

RE: Cat stove?
Okay, I didn't find the tape yet anyway, but what number of burner holes do you use, if you can count on one or two EXTRA LARGE burner holes where the seal leaks? How many minutes does it burn per ounce? I would think that a leak would affect the burning time. Mine would need to be made differently from my first time, because after it was done burning, I picked it up and it popped apart. If you knew how long it took me to fit the two pieces together to start with. A rubic cube would be easier. I know, that since so many of you have had no problems with this, that this shows how clumsy I am, but I don't care, because I'm Irish and that makes me STUBBORN!

Let's see, I walked into an outdoor store, I saw a small Trangia stove, I thought, "this fit's the bill!", and I bought it.

No muss, no fuss and I'll find some other way to get pu$$y into the backcountry.

Okay the first attempt at the pepsi stove was less than ideal, but the second one works great, and was easier to assemble. I'm working on a couple of different ideas for a pot stand.
