RE: Worst Road
Some windy road in No. California which goes through Platina. Even my road atlas said "Bad Road!" Lumber trucks, windy like an arcade game and it was about 110 f. Drove with one eye on the temp gauge, other eye on the drop to our deaths!

RE: Worst Road
That would be either highway 36 or the county road that cuts across the foothills to Anderson/Redding. Probaly the latter.
I was on that road sight seeing when I first moved to the area.

Mine would be the Cecilville/Callahan road between the Trinities and Marbles

RE: Worst Road
The Mineral King road would be way up there. 1 1/2 lanes wide, 2-way...winds along the canyonside up 7,000 feet in 25 miles...mostly dirt, with a fair amount of washboarding...and on the lowest section you have the thrill of dodging logging trucks.

RE: Worst Road
The road (if you can call it a road) to Marble Canyon in Death Valley N.P. It starts out in a dry lake bed, with soft sand and silt being blown into the air. Then it enters a wash and it's 5 mph of heart pumping, spine crushing, skid-plate scratching, boulder crawling.
Or the 95 northbound through Vegas at 5pm.

Any road in Mississippi - Do they ever work on any of them?

RE: Worst Road
Yes, southerngal, I just got back from Huntsville, travelling across US 72 through North MS. They had traffic slowed to a crawl for about 15 miles east of Red Banks while they painted new stripes on the road. LOL.

RE: Worst Road
Agree with tehipite...one reason why I don't go to the Western Sierras. Another one is the road to Florence Lake or Edison Lake, in the dark. Took me 12 hrs to get there last time (got lost) instead of 5 hrs.

I kinda like the 5 mph of heart pumping, spine crushing, skid-plate scratching, boulder crawling in my 4Runner. I use 4WD a few times every month.

RE: Worst Road
Rampart Range Road climbing up from Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs heading to Woodland Park (might I add IN THE DARK??) Continuous witchbacks add fun to the boulders... OR mebbee "The Old Wagon Road" climbing across the mountain above Rollins Pass, high above Winter Park, CO.... 11,800 or so feet.

(course **I** am a 4 WD wienie.... LOL!)

Oh, and I've WALKED the infamous Elephant Hill Road at Canyonlands (Needles section).

RE: Worst Road
Forgot about the Florence/Edison road, Snownymph--that's another great not-quite-two-lane thrill ride. Went up there once at the tail end of a weekend with some big shindig, and was dodging oncoming Enormomobiles much of the way.

But really...the western Sierra is worth it. Not as many sheep...umm, I mean people...as the overused Eastside trailheads.

RE: Worst Road
Yeah, you're right. Its worth it if I have more than Sat/Sun. I've gone there on 3-5 day trips, and its nice. Just can't handle the long, windy, dodging deer in the night driving late Friday night/Saturday morning. Most of my trips are overnighters, so the east side is easy entry.

RE: Worst Road
Hey - US 72 across N. MS and AL (twixt Memphis and Huntsville) is GREAT!

A road in MT. It has an exit from the Interstate. I found it on my road atlas, and took it enroute between Missoula and Jackson Hole, WY.

Anyhoo, I woulda used four wheel drive at many many locations, but the Mighty Mighty Tacoma doesn't have it - I had to rely on my superior driving skills to get us through the rough spots - LOL! Belle got a kick from the cows throughout the open range that the road disected. It made for a kewl drive.
