RE: Favorite road trip
Hwy 50 to Lake Tahoe, down to Carson City, NV and south along 395. Can't beat the view of the eastern Sierras. Head east to Death Valley and south to Las Vegas. Incredible geology and vistas. I did it one April a few years ago in a convertible mustang with my lab sitting shotgun. Had two fishing rods, a shotgun, and a tall frosty one between legs with Clapton and Neil Young blasting away in the stereo.

RE: Favorite road trip
The road from Manali to Leh. Stunning scenery, it takes about 22 hours and has an altitude gain of about 3300m.

The road to the airport, it means I'm going on a trek again.

Highway 20 across northern Nebraska. Surprising hills and forests in the NW (Pine Ridge area), as well as Fort Robinson State Park, where Crazy Horse was killed. Simple beauty of the rolling sandhills in the middle of the state. Valentine and the Niobrara River, an amazing oasis. (Oh yeah, I was cruising this strip when I heard that Princess Di died. FYI....just one of those time/place connections. What year was that anyway? '97?)

Regarding above, it's easy to see how the West must have been to the pioneers.

Also, "Scenic Highway 12" from Tropic, Utah to near Capitol Reef N'tl Park. Great hikes off it! Superb red rock scenery! And the fun of trying to find a beer in those small Mormon towns like Escalante! :-)

U.S. 2, from the UP to Glacier NP.

Then, U.S. 93 from Glacier to Ely, NV.

Prolly 2500 miles - of which only about 10 miles run concurrent with Interstate Hwys in Duluth, MN and Missoula, MT.
