gambling bailout
Las Vegas is hurting big time... congress to consider a bailout. Would you support a government bailout of Las Vegas?

I live in Reno, and things here, economically speaking, are O.K. I have no reason to think that Vegas would be doing any worse than we are. Maybe the city should look into econcomic diversification instaed of government assistance.

RE: gambling bailout
Things are bad here but don't let the casinos fool you, they have very deep pockets. The local/state government on the other hand is dirt poor.

15,000 casino workers lost their jobs since Sept. 11 and everyone here is starting to feel it. We've lost close to 1 million visitors from cancelled conventions alone. That equals a lot of money being spent and a lot of sales tax being collected.

The #2 business, construction is now starting to feel the effects. All casino expansions have been put on hold due to the lack of tourism money. All major roadway projects not currently under construction have been put on hold due to the lack of cash flow entering the local/state government's coffers.

It's a big ripple spreading out from the strip and it's is going to affect everything in this city over the next year(s).

It's going to be a bleak holiday season here for lots of families but those of us with jobs are trying to give what we can so others will at least have food on the table for Christmas.

I agree Vegas isn't as diverse as it should be, but it's doing pretty well for a city in the middle of the Nevada desert with little to offer big manufacturing companies.

Let Lost Wages evaporate. Or at least the stealing industry. Oh wait, I forgot, if they start hurting enough they'll just step up their take from minors.

RE: gambling bailout
You've got to admire Steve Wynn. He recently criticized the corporate owned casinos for overreacting and laying off so many workers. He said that he's never had to resort to layoffs in all his years in the business. He said he'd have to have a gun to his head and his back to the wall first. No wonder he has such high employee morale.
