Favorite country singerView Messages“Wow, I just read through this thread! bacpac seems to have made assumptions about the political correctness of country music and its listeners. Dwight Yoakum Hank Williams and Patsy Cline are two of my favorite dead ones. Is George Jones still alive? How about Ray Price? Steve Earl rocks! Say, was it, "Chuck Berry is the Hank Williams of Rock 'n Roll? Or is Hank Williams the Chuck Berry of country music?” 7:37:50 AM 12/11/01 “George Jones isn't dead, he just smells funny.” 8:21:13 AM 12/11/01 Sometimes I Dig It More... “I tend to appreciate a person's music more when I know they write their own songs (even co-write), unfortunately there aren't that many country singers that write their own music. I was truely shocked when I found out Garth Brooks didn't write most (prolly all) of the tunes that made him famous. Country music is full of tall, thin, attractive, well-paid front-man puppets used to sell songs and themselves, while the songwriters tend to never see the spotlight (ie. Achy Breaky Heart situation, especially when what's his face got the CMA award for the song and never even acknowledged the actual songwriter). Sad! Shanniah Twain actually has been writing songs her whole life, and yes, she wrote the songs she is known for. Of course, she married a famous producer who fiddled with her music to make it more ear-candy radio-worthy, but hey, nobody's perfect. I should've been a cowboy... I should've learned to rope and ride...” 8:39:08 AM 12/11/01 Peter Puffing Makes the Difference “See Tilt! That stuff works for Elton, but Garth just ends up looking like a Brian Adams-type sellout. Maybe it works for Elton because he's gay. I agree with you about the lack of singer/song writters in country music Budder. If I had to have only one country artist to listen to the rest of my life I'd have to say it'd be Brooks and Dunn. Them boyz rock!” 8:51:41 AM 12/11/01 “Gram Parsons. "Thousand Dollar Wedding" is the quintessential country lament. My first Emmylou album (as a new release on vinyl, just to date me) was Elite Hotel. Still an old favorite. Rosanne Cash before she tried to go pop, most particularly King's Record Shop. My wife has been playing Lucinda Williams' latest CD a lot around the house and it's taking hold.” 9:33:55 AM 12/11/01 How about the Western part of C&W “Marty Robbins Michael Martin Murphey Red Steagall” 10:19:54 AM 12/11/01 “Two Words. Coyote Ugly. Piper Perabo Links She can come sing for me anytime. (and if LeAnn Rimes wants to come along and make a cameo, I am up with 'dat!)” 10:23:49 AM 12/11/01 “Barf Brooks does suck, but I'm sure he's a nice guy.......he brings to mind Nigal.......a chunky boy with a goofy goatee! Me, well hell, I'm more of a Clint Black look-alike! Achy Breaky Heart......hohohahahah, Billy Ray Sore-azz has done more for the proliferation of the MULLET than any man alive! 10:32:07 AM 12/11/01 Favorite Country Singer? “one with laryngitis. except the Dixie Chicks! ;-P” 10:37:37 AM 12/11/01 “"he brings to mind Nigal.......a chunky boy with a goofy goatee!" LOL! I gots the full shag goin' on with my face now Tom. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't talk about shaggin' and my face in the same sentance?” 10:50:05 AM 12/11/01 “Heheheheheh The full shag, huh? 10:59:28 AM 12/11/01 “Re: The country singer/songwriters I like the old country a lot. Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, etc. I'm not a very big fan of the "modern" country. I hate it when they cover old rock tunes. But, I watch Austin City Limits every weekend when I'm not in the woods. Most, if not all, of their guests are writers and, IMO, any type of song is much better when performed by the writer. It's one of the 3 shows I'll watch on TV (along with Red Green, and Simpsons).” 11:11:22 AM 12/11/01 “le subtil, I'm with you on the old stuff. Not much interesting coming out of 'mainstream' country these days. But Austin City Limits does have some great stuff. They get the interesting people--songwriters, as you said--who are at the edges of the spotlight. My favorite recent country album is "Tulare Dust", a tribut to Merle Haggard--Haggard songs sung by people like Dave Alvin, John Doe, Iris DeMent, etc. Great stuff.” 11:41:32 AM 12/11/01 “Tom and Pekka mentioned a few I really like but didn't mention earlier: Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash and Gram Parsons. I wasn in the audience for Austin City Limits a couple times in the late 70's. I used to listen to KOKE back then... they were intensely opinionated about their country music. The played Willie, Waylon and the Flat Landers. One day I heard the DJ say "somebody hand me that new record John Denver s record... I need something to put this cigarette out in." (Kenny Rogers got the same treatment).” 2:34:59 PM 12/11/01 “Shew, y'all gotta be kiddin me!?” 2:40:05 PM 12/11/01 “Right-O, Nigal. I don't know if Bernie Taupin's gay (don't think so), but that's definitely a lovesong to Roy Rogers, LOL Austin City Limits... YOWZA Anybody remember The Dillards? They were slicker than deer guts on a doorknob.” 3:29:19 PM 12/11/01 “And someone couldn't believe the college football thread kept coming up? Favorite COUNTRY singer? Bwaaaaaahahahahahahahaha...” 3:32:49 PM 12/11/01 “I saw a TV(Public?) program in which Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Wariner were taking turns pickin' the sh!t outta some Telecaster guitars......WOW can those boys play!!! Virtuosity
7:49:51 AM 12/12/01 “Ozzy Steven Tyler Freddie Mercury John,Paul,George or Ringo- Country music is a plot to disrupt all of society.” 1:45:39 PM 12/15/01 “Nigal- Maybe you're just too young to appreciate county musac. Or you've never been divorced” 8:02:58 PM 12/15/01 “all my ex's live in Texas......that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.” 8:11:11 PM 12/15/01 “Ped, Your wife has excellent taste in music, although it's tough to say Lucinda Williams is "country" she more like-like-well I just can't say exactly what she"s like! That song "Essence" makes me sweat!” 8:27:50 PM 12/15/01 “Two words... Steve Earle "Some mornings will find me up above the timberline. Lonesome don't seem like much once you're this high. When it's all said and done I usually find Me and the eagle are of the same mind." -Me and the Eagle” 9:19:53 PM 12/15/01 “I think it was pekka who has the Lucinda fan wife. But Ped did say that he likes Iris DeMent. I think that "Easy's Getting Harder Everyday" is one of the best songs I have ever heard. But come on, you said "Old Emmy Lou" Ouch! Come on, now. Emmy could never be old.” 9:36:12 PM 12/15/01 “Yea, your right it is Pekka's wife that likes Lu, guess I got my Ps mixed up. Is Iris DeMent country? If the BEST song you ever heard I wanna hear it.” 10:08:45 PM 12/15/01 “I don't know how you would classify Iris. I would not say country. I know people who cannot listen to her voice without cringing. Easy's getting Harder Everyday is on compilation CD I have called Women of the Heartland. Lu and Emmy and Iris all sing on it. It is a great CD.” 10:11:40 PM 12/15/01 “Now THAT's a scary damn concept: Country Muzak” 10:20:51 PM 12/15/01 As to Lucinda... “Well my wife prefers 'Essence,' but yesterday while on a long drive through the forest on twisty county roads (in my brand new pickup!), I played 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road' and enjoyed it immensely...and it was definitely country, with the exception perhaps of the song Joy. But with others such as Drunken Angel and all that slide guitar twanging away, I'd definitely put that CD in the country bin. Now that is NOT the bin in which I'd put Shania or others of that ilk. We get a taste of it all up here, as Rhinelander plays host each summer to the Hodag Country Music Festival, one of the longest running such shindigs. Lots of Neal McCoy fans in this town. BTW, when I was an arts & entertainment writer a couple decades ago, I got a brief interview with Johnny Cash when he came to town. He was pretty shakey.” 3:38:29 PM 12/16/01 “Johnny might have been a bit cokey.” 7:22:41 AM 12/17/01 “Tom, could've been, though it seemed a bit more speedy.” 8:36:39 AM 12/17/01 “I have none.” 8:49:25 PM 12/22/01 “Wait I take that back I have one. Johnny Cash..... He has some cool songs.....” 8:51:12 PM 12/22/01
