“I tend to appreciate a person's music more when I know they write their own songs (even co-write), unfortunately there aren't that many country singers that write their own music. I was truely shocked when I found out Garth Brooks didn't write most (prolly all) of the tunes that made him famous.

Country music is full of tall, thin, attractive, well-paid front-man puppets used to sell songs and themselves, while the songwriters tend to never see the spotlight (ie. Achy Breaky Heart situation, especially when what's his face got the CMA award for the song and never even acknowledged the actual songwriter). Sad!

Shanniah Twain actually has been writing songs her whole life, and yes, she wrote the songs she is known for. Of course, she married a famous producer who fiddled with her music to make it more ear-candy radio-worthy, but hey, nobody's perfect.

I like the old country a lot. Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, etc. I'm not a very big fan of the "modern" country. I hate it when they cover old rock tunes.

But, I watch Austin City Limits every weekend when I'm not in the woods. Most, if not all, of their guests are writers and, IMO, any type of song is much better when performed by the writer. It's one of the 3 shows I'll watch on TV (along with Red Green, and Simpsons).”

But Austin City Limits does have some great stuff. They get the interesting people--songwriters, as you said--who are at the edges of the spotlight.

My favorite recent country album is "Tulare Dust", a tribut to Merle Haggard--Haggard songs sung by people like Dave Alvin, John Doe, Iris DeMent, etc. Great stuff.”

I wasn in the audience for Austin City Limits a couple times in the late 70's. I used to listen to KOKE back then... they were intensely opinionated about their country music. The played Willie, Waylon and the Flat Landers. One day I heard the DJ say "somebody hand me that new record John Denver s record... I need something to put this cigarette out in." (Kenny Rogers got the same treatment).”

“Well my wife prefers 'Essence,' but yesterday while on a long drive through the forest on twisty county roads (in my brand new pickup!), I played 'Car Wheels on a Gravel Road' and enjoyed it immensely...and it was definitely country, with the exception perhaps of the song Joy. But with others such as Drunken Angel and all that slide guitar twanging away, I'd definitely put that CD in the country bin.

Now that is NOT the bin in which I'd put Shania or others of that ilk. We get a taste of it all up here, as Rhinelander plays host each summer to the Hodag Country Music Festival, one of the longest running such shindigs. Lots of Neal McCoy fans in this town.

BTW, when I was an arts & entertainment writer a couple decades ago, I got a brief interview with Johnny Cash when he came to town. He was pretty shakey.”
