Sandles on the trail
I think I want a pair, I would like them both to be light, and effective. Cost, not an issue. What brands are good, for both after hike, in camp, and 12 miles on the trail

I have a pair of Birkie's that have endured the last 8 years of hiking.
I did the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Ranier last year in them.
I recently bought a pair of Teva's and they seem to be ok.
I will keep wearing my Birkie's until they fall off of my feet and then I wil buy a new pair.

i have a pair of teva's that are a few years old and they are goooood. they are actually more sturdy feeling than my dayhikers. they are a discontinued model. they are heavy. i haven't strapped them to my pack on my last few outings.

A pair of Tevas, just make sure they are long enough for you to kick rocks and not stub your toe. My wife has a pair of Chaco's and loves them.

Go with tevas. They hold up the best. I hiked several miles in mine with a pack on and got shin splints pretty bad, but I was pleased with them. You dont want to replace your boots with sandals but you can use them for everything but hiking with your pack on. for day hikes without a pack I wore sandals and had no problem. But go with Tevas.

I bought a pair of Nike Aether sandals last summer. They are incredibly comfy and much lighter than my Tevas. I don't take them however because they weigh something.

Last month I did take them however because it was a short trip. I wore them when I got up in the night and managed to get a scorpion sting on my foot.

oooh MP. that's too bad

I have never had a scorpion sting yet. Was it in the sand on the beach?

Well... it was a service trip at Phantom so we were staying in the bunkhouse. I slept outside on the picnic table. When I went inside to use the facilities I used a tiny flashlight so as not to waken a house full of men. I did not turn on the bathroom light because it made the noisy fan turn on--I think it got me right there while I sat on the can. It was on the inside of my arch and it swelled up. When I hiked out the next day I had a big blister where that skin touched my shoe. I have had a painful one before but this one just itched like crazy. My boyfriend who grew up with lots of scorpions on Oak Creek was the one that told me it was a scorpion--he says some of them are milder or they don't use all of their juice.

I always take my tevas, don't know how much they weigh and don't care. I've day hiked and backpacked in them.

I like a continuous piece of comfortable webbing. I don't like lots of buckles. I like the choice of either using a stabilizing (lateral motion) toe strap or removing that so they can be worn with socks. Therefore, I prefer Chaccos.

I had a pair of Merrels and they died a horrible death on Isle Royale during a dayhike (after 3 years of use). I replaced them with some Tevas. I don't find the tevas as comfortable or supportive and they seem heavier, but they seem to be holding up better. I'd rather hike in boots or tennis shoes than sandals unless there are lots of wet trails, (above ankle deep).

Don't have much experience w/ this one, but yesterday I tried on some RocketDog clogs that were so comf. I would consider wearing them while hiking.

When we visited thru hikers this summer - they used a certian type - it wasn't tevas or merrals - they are at Campmor - thick high on the sides soles about 90.00

Sorry - didnt get the name. They swore by them.

"Pretty Woman" Teva's - a lot lighter than my old Teva's, and a lot softer on the feet.

RE: Sandles on the trail
I wore Tevas on an entire 22 mile hike up to 11,000 feet last summer. My hiking partner forgot his boots so he had no choice; I just decided to go along with him and ditched mine as well. They worked out great. No socks except at night and I was a lot more agile climbing through sharp, rocky sections.

I have some Teva Spoilers which have waterproof suede straps lined with a smooth, nylon mesh so you can hike quite a ways without getting rubbed too much. The soles are good grippers and if you get them large enough so that your toes have about a half inch from the front, you won't stub them on rocks.

RE: Sandles on the trail
I loved my Teva's.... Then I bought the Merrills "convertibles" and love them even more. They have so much more support then my old Teva's. And, the back strap comes off so they will just slip on and off at camp.

I've done several dayhikes wearing them and find them to be extremely comfortable.
