Ugliest State
Bluebelch got me thinking. Even though the coins are pretty ugly, what about the states they represent? There's gotta be REALLY ugly states? Any votes?

RE: Ugliest State
I thought New Jersey was quite beautiful. Very green and lush for the most part. Atlantic City has its problems.

Nevada is pretty barren for the most part. I've driven over most of it, and the Jarbige mountains are about the only redeeming portion

Most of Wyoming is pretty much a waste, however the Windrivers and the national parks more than make up for it.

So far, I guess Nebraska is by far the most boring state I've ever driven border to border. But I'd have to guess that even it has it's beauty if you look close enough. On the opposite note, I think Utah is by far the most diverse state I've even explored.

They don't call New Jersey the Garden State for nothing.

I've been through almost every state in the lower 48 and I can't say that I've seen an ugly one.

Kansas is not all flat, the east part has nice rolling hills.

If you'd ever seen a lightning storm in Kansas you wouldn't think it was ugly.

RE: Ugliest State
Actually, very little of KS is flat. It's grassland and farmland - expanse. There are few trees except around rivers, creeks, and draws. From some hilltops, one can see forever - hence the perception of flatness. I think it's a gorgeous state.

The Sand Hills of NE are way cool. The Badlands, too.

Eastern WY ain't mountainous like the west, but the seemingly endless grasslands are a sight to behold.

NV is hot, treeless, and mountainous. Awesome.

God Bless America!

Why? Does America need God's blessing? I ould think that there are much more needy countries not to mention a few more deserving ones.

I have many relatives in Kansas. It is not boring at all. It has many beautiful areas. I agree I think all states have their ugly sides, but they all have greeat beauty too. Also I think Gods blessing is on the whole world, its just a matter of perspective.

Yes, Kansas is, hands down, the ugliest state in the USA. Please do not come here. It will only revolt you to the point of physical illness. Stay away!
Completely flat, no trees at all, 110 degrees from May 1 to Oct 1, and -20 the rest of the time.
I warned you....

Georgia?
Hmmmmm...
I must've missed it.

I've done five cross-country roadtrips totaling 34,000 miles and can't recall many places prettier than the drive through the Piedmont along Hwy 11.

Or the quaint squares and row houses of Savannah.

Or the drive between Dahlonega and Morganton along Hwy 60.

Or the old streets lined with Antebellum homes in Monroe, Thomasville, Milledgeville, and Macon.

Or the oh-so-slightly rolling hills of the farmland along Hwy 33.

Or the dead flat roads through piney woods of the Coastal Plain around The Okee-fe-noke.

Or...
well - you get the idea.

I've always felt that sunsets were much better in flatland states like those in the midwest. And the stars are much more brilliant without the glare of the populations.

States like Kansas are the canvas on which the majesty of the universe is painted.

RE: Ugliest State
I started life in Kansas and I still have lots of family there. I`m torn about that being the ugliest place on Earth, or raw beauty in motion.

Have you ever stood in a gloden wheat field and looked out as far as the eye can see and watched the wave action of the grain tops flowing in the blowing winds of a Kansas sunrise? Mile after mile of nothing but things growing in well placed rows can catch and hold your eye as few things can. Kansas is different alright, but on a crisp fall day with bird dogs in the corn, or milo stubble and pheasents on the wing has it`s own magic.

A few mountains and a scattering of large trees would make walking across Kansas worth the effort.

I sure love to hate that place I love!

Have to agree with bluebelch and gearslut. Lived in Iowa for a year that seemed a lifetime. Saw every mile marker across North Dakota on the inner-state. And when I got off for a night a "micro-burst" stole my tent during supper.

There are no thoroughly ugly states. But I submit that Texas has MORE ugly than any other. I have to drive through ugly most of the day to get out of here!

But I also have some painful childhood memories of driving across Kansas.

But it makes the Piney Woods, Hill Country and Big Bend look so much better.
