Rain jacket alternatives
Here's what I have:
1. Ballistic Patagucci shell
2. lightweight coated nylon anorack.

I want something more breathable without sacrificing total weather protection. Something I won't sweat my ass off in but won't be totally vulnerable to the elements. Maybe something like the Marmot driclime that I've read a lot about, but I don't think it has a hood, eh?

Basically I want something like this bad boy

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This may be overkill, but my wife just gave me an Arc'teryx Alpha SV jacket for my birthday. It's heavy-duty goretex, under 25 oz., has a hood that can accomodate a climbing helmet and lots of zippered vents. really watertight, but expensive!

Buth they are kind of crinkly and not that durable, aren't they? I want something that's gonna last a while.

I've got that with the Patagonia shell. I'm leaning towards something microfibre.

I'll bet my Scooby Doo would like a puncho for when it rains. Sarabelle, did your daddy make it for you or did he use dollers to get it at the store?

Marmot Precip for W/B and lightweight. The Driclime is a good windproof layer, but is not waterproof.

But, if ya want Driclime, it can be had with a hood:

I think sierra trading post has an Activent suit on sale. Gore stopped making Activent, but it is pretty good as far as breathability and water resistance. You may want to check it out.

Just spent four weekends with Mom and Whispering Bill (new knickname- "Tippy"). Both of them swear by their frog toggs. The things block wind and rain. They've used them in cold weather and say that they work well with just expedition weight long johns underneath. They went through some hot and rainy weather in south Florida, and said they breathed well.

I believe that I'll pick some up for myself after hearing their enthusiasic praise.

WJGiles has a blue "RED LEDGE" breathable, waterproof and very light weight 12-14 oz? Cost $49.00 in Campmor.

I'd say that beats the Marmot Precip by about $50.00 bucks and has essentially the same features. Go to Campmor and compare yourself. Or look in Backpacker magazine they reviewed both jackets and naturally liked both. hmmm?

I inspected Giles last weekend and was thoroughly impressed. I checked out the Precip at a local outfitter and can't say it appeared to be built any better.

I have neither. I have a heavy TNF Gore Tex jacket and an inexpensive Helly Henson non-breatable but very light weight jacket that I actually use on the trail.

Remember Weight Counts!

Try Bushwacking in a pair of Frogg Toggs! You would be better off with a Go-Lite umbrella. Which reminds me of the funniest sight I've seen lately. Ole Jerbear with his G-L umbrella sticking down his shirt. LOL

Yeah. I need something that will put up with a certain amount of abuse. I'm pretty rough on my gear.
