on a dollar a day ?

right now it runs between $5-6.00 a day which I feel is just too much. I am a single ,white , male so all the clintonite foodbanks and freebies aren't available to me .anyone have any useful ideas ?

Here's my meal plan from college:
-pasta, mac and cheese on sale for 5/$1, cheap beer
-make friends with the guy at the grocery store who has to dump the day-old bread. We used to meet him out back by the dumpster and fill the car!

Dude, it's just walking. How much gear do you need?

I'd like to combine the "take a knife to your gear thread" and this one. Poor unsuspecting hiker runs into gear-induced anorexic with riptorn backpack. It's the outdoors version of heroin chic.

What, sarabelle won't share? Maybe you need to shoot more deer, or come to Wyoming and shoot an Elk. Of course the cost per pound goes up dramatically for Elk as compared to buying a side of beef.

(Don't tell my wife though)

start cookin bean recipes also. dried beans are cheap and can be prepared in many variations. go to sam's club and get your spices (you can't beat the prices for these). make your own recipes from what sounds good. it usually is.

RE: on a dollar a day
are we talking spending 5-6 dollors a day while on the trail for food, or in real life?

5-6 I don't think you can get any lower, but then again I don't know where you are from??

I can't even get a school lunch for under 3$ so the other 2 meals only have 1 dolor, thats tough. But like I said thats in NJ, now is you live in some piss poor state where the average income is like nothing, thus food is cheap, but in a state where people rake in cash, food is expensive

RE: on a dollar a day
Buy your rice and beans in bulk. Initially, buying a 50 pound bag of rice will set you back, but you won't have to buy again for several months. For nutrition, brown rice is better than white.

Learn to enjoy just water as a beverage.

Find a friend who shops at Costco and you can get all kinds of things in large amounts for a lower price.

Try buying fresh veggies in bulk, then dehydrate them. Eat like you're on the trail every night.

Live in a studio and sleep on the floor.

Get rid of your car and get a bus pass and a bike (again, high cost initially, but pays for itself quickly).

Don't work in television unless you are an anchor.

Panhandle while walking around town or waiting for the bus.

Supermarkets in FL give free samples several days of the week. Check your area supermarkets for the same and keep making a loop through the store until you have enough eaten or in your pockets for later.

RE: on a dollar a day
Cous-cous can be bought for 59 cents a pound. 50 pounds of potatoes are about $6, shop at a "seconds" type fruit market, they get blemished fruit fom big chains and sell it cheap. Check with local bakeries for day old bread. We have bought 50lb flour sacks of day old bread for $2.50 for bear bait. We would pick out a half-dozen loaves and freeze em. Buy a BIG freezer to store all that bulk stuff, cook from scratch and freeze veggies when they hit a seasonal peak and are dirt cheap. Buy a rifle, kill some deer, plant some veggies. If you are in the city get old 5 gallon buckets for planters, compost your veggie scraps and coffee grounds (plus freebies from work) to defray and eliminate non-organic fertilizers. Eat your neighbors dog and cat oh yeah...bargain shop!

The best deal I ever got was a 50lb bag of pinto beans! Boil 'em up, and put em' in a tortill with rice, cheese and salsa. MMMM, Did you know certain beans (e,g. pinto beans) and rice make a complete protein?

RE: on a dollar a day
Once a week make a big pot of soup, stew, chili, or spaghetti sauce. Assuming that you have a freezer, you can freeze portions and eat them as needed. There are lots of ways to make this stuff inexpensively - buy onions, celery, carrots, garlic, etc. in big packages, chop them & freeze the extra. Instead of buying pre-cut stew meat, get the cheapest steak or roast you can find & cut it yourself, or use soup bones or chicken drumsticks. Making large portions may require a bigger initial investment but will save you in the long run.

If you decrease the quality of you food. You'll be either too tired or at worst malnourished to even bother about going hiking.

Eat up and eat up big! The most important bit of gear is the thing that carries your pack.

Knock off a package store, make sure you smile at the camera on your way out. "Accidentally" drop your wallet during the getaway. After you are arrested, insist on a court appointed lawyer. Guaranteed to cut you food bill for at least five to ten years.

Hey! You can't be dissin a fictitious member of this group. In reality that dog may be just a schitzophenic personality of a very twisted mind, but that doesn't matter. Most of the folks here think they are actually talking to a dog and the dog talks back.

You are messing with some very fragile minds.

"Eat to live don't live to eat"

Modify your routine. Eat ONE meal a day, and make sure it gives you the best nutritional value you can afford. (A supplemental one-a-day vitamin is a really good idea).

Consult an honest to god dietician and ask foe for advice.
