Black Creek Widerness Trail, MS
I arrived at the Fairly Brigde Landing/Trailhead at 7:00 am. My plan was to hike the 40 miles south to north ending a the Big Creek Landing/Trailhead at 5:00 pm the next afternoon. I left my truck at the Fairly Bridge Landing and arranged for a pickup at the Big Creek Landing.

It was 7 miles from the FBL to the actual wilderness area. This section was pretty easy going with a few ups and downs. The next 11 miles trough the wilderness area was a very nice hike with alot of good views of the river and sandbars.

I crossed Hwy 29 at the Janis Trailhead and continued on for a couple more miles before stopping for the night. I set up camp on a high bluff overlooking the river. I cooked dinner and was just relaxing and reading when a large bobcat came out on the sandbar across the river. He yelled at me a couple of times then ran back into the woods. Around midnight an owl came into camp and started hooten away. I like owls. First day, 20 miles, right on schedule.

I awoke at 5:00 am to a light rain. I made breakfast, packed up and hit the trail at 6:00. By midmorning it was raining hard but didn't last long.

The trail went from bad to real bad from the Janis Trailhead to Moody's Landing. Lots of blowdown and unmarked sections. I had to do alot of backtracking and searching to find the trail in several places. This put me behind schedule for my pickup at 5:00. I stopped at the Ash Nursery Trailhead called and changed the pickup lacation from Big Creek Landing to the Ash Nursery Trailhead. I have hiked the Big Creek to Ash Nursery before and it is my least favorite section (about 5 miles). Lots of houses and road walking. Second day, 15 miles.

If you plan to hike this trail, plan on the Fairly Bridge to Janis section. The section from Janis to Big Creek is not worth the effort.

There are alot of foot bridges on this trail but I didn't see any TROLLS. Come to think about it, I didn't see any goats either.

Leatherneck,

Glad you had a good trip. The reason you didn't see any trolls is because they have been here. See ya next week.

Does this area have any low hills like the Homochitto N.F.?

RE: Black Creek Widerness Trail, MS
Steve Hiker,
It has some decent ones on the section from Fairly Bridge to Janis and a few between Moody's Landing and Ash Nursery.

Chili36, give me a yell before you start and I'll give you directions and what ever other help I can add.

I did a day hike from the Janice Trailhead on Saturday with my kids. My 11 year old son is excited about bp'ing this trail sometime in the spring. My 7 year old daughter wasn't hardly as enthused but did the 4 miles with no complaints. After our hike, we drove around to the Ash nursery area and spent the remainder of the afternoon throwing frisbee.
