Fire !!!
I was curious with the cold weather and winter here... How does everyone heat their home? Who uses a fireplace, wood stove, pellet stove, or gas stoves? We have hot water baseboard heat that is heated with a propane furnace. Then we have the wood fireplace insert in the living room. We've been doing 90% of our heating with the insert.

RE: Fire !!!
I would check the amount of pollutants coming from a "fire place" and compare it to how much is coming from motor vehicles. You will be surprised.

3.5 Ton split package unit. I don't mind the elements while I am hiking, but I do enjoy the thermostat when I am at home.

Bunyop, we have catalitic converters on some of our woodstoves and fireplace inserts here. Does coal or oil burn cleaner than wood?

We have in the past heated our home with our woodstove but haven't yet fired it up this year. With the baby all parts of the house (her bedroom mostly) need to be somewhat warm. We'll suplement with it this year. Next year we'll probably heat with it totally again.

RE: Fire !!!
twig, did you finally get your wood in for the winter? I did, at least for this winter.

Primary heat source is baseboard electric. Big $$$$. Have a insert upstairs and HAD a free standing wood stove downstairs. Depending on the winter went through 5 to 8 cords a year.

Took the wood stove out of the basement and put in a gas stove. Got my wood split and piled for the upstairs finally last Saturday. About three cords. Next year will go to all gas. It's great, just turn the remote control to whatever temp you want and there it stays.

Gas furnace. Its an oldy but a goody. The ducts could use a cleaning, however. Sometime we just use space heaters for specific rooms and turn the furnace off. I like the heated liquid/radiator type -- doesn't seem to dry the air out so much and are far less noisy than the blower variety.

RE: Fire !!!
central Propane with woodstove supplement/backup.

I normally cut my own wood, but the last several years people who owed me money paid me in firewood so I haven't cut any in a while.

We have a gas fireplace, but have never used it. We keep the windows open.

Only time we use heat is in the mornings to heat up the truck during snowboarding season. We camp out in the hills.

Like Sass said we supplement with a wood stove. On a related note I will be replacing our furnace sometime soon and with that we will get some central-air!
