Hey, B... Did you see any of those meteors last weekend? Or were you too far south? The International Meteor Org is reporting hourly rates of 2500-3000 for your general vicinity, and that second peak.

Oh, man, that's too bad. I saw one preliminary report from a group of observers near Alice Springs --- they estimated rates of over 3000 per hour.

For example, they said they saw ~371 meteors in a 13-minute period from 03.17 to 03.30 CST.

You know where the phrase "sleep tight" comes from? Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, bed frames used to have ropes interwoven between them that acted as the boxsprings, kind of like a hammock. However, over time, they stretched and loosened and needed to me tightened. So, sleeping "tight" meant tightening those puppies up to ensure you got a good night's rest.

Of course, bed bugs back then was a given.

Just thot I'd pass it along.

Sassafras albidum
Sassafras around here in Virginia is a different plant than the Aus. Sassafras. - Some notes gathered from the web:

-------------------

Sassafras
Author/s: Tish Davidson

Description
Sassafras is a small tree, Sassafras albidum, belonging to the laurel family native to eastern North America. Sassafras grows in woodlands in rich, sandy, well-drained soil from Maine to Florida, reaching a height of about 75 ft (25 m). The tree has also been imported to Europe, probably by the Spaniards who discovered it in Florida.

All parts of the sassafras tree are aromatic with a pleasant odor and a slightly sweet but astringent taste. The root and root bark were formerly used medicinally. The root is thick and woody. When alive, it is whitish, but rapidly turns cinnamon brown on exposure to air. Other names for sassafras are ague tree, cinnamon wood, saxifrax, saxafrax, and saloop. There are other plants that have the word sassafras in their name that are completely unrelated to Sassafras albidum. These include black sassafras (Oliveri cortex); swamp sassafras (Magnolia glauca); Australian sassafras (Antherosperma moschatum); sassafras goesianum (Massoja aromatica,); and California sassafras (Umbellularia californica).

-----------------

Other notes - usually recognized from the leaf - often looks like a single or double thumbed mitten. Bears will often break down smaller Sassafras trees in the fall to get to the dark blue fruit. The fruit is smallish - approx 1 cm sitting upright in a reddish "cup" a little like an egg cup.

Thanks, I'm guessing the Australian Sassafras would have been called that because of it's similarities. I shall ring the Herbarium and find out.

But until then, Nighty night.
